Well, you will get mixed results from that question, but I heard its a TO4E with stage 3 wheel and #8 hotside from one person. Good luck finding out!

also remember that used prices are not the same as new prices, i bought a powerhaus k27/8 with around 3000 miles for $600, 55lb delphi injectors were around $350 and i found out later i could have gotten them cheaper.

If you go for a Garrett T04E, Pauerman has his website up and running, he has three new turbochargers for sale (T04E 50, T04E 46 and T04E 60) not sure on the hotsides, prices are very nice though.

*edit*

http://www.pauertuning.com/turbos.htm $900 but with #8 hotside, not #6.

I think he needs to determine the HP goals to better match the turbo... My 60-1 HIFI with #8 and stage 3 wheel spools a bar of boost just over 3,000. So maybe the #8 with a higher HP potential would be a longer term option.
oops sorry about that i remember we are talking about running a #6 hotside

Thank you everyone for all the helpful comments, I have been keeping up with the thread and trying to get a hold of as many turbo rebuilders/resellers as possible to find out what each one sells.

I do want to get this turbo very soon; hopefully I will have it ordered by the end of this week. I have to have my car up and running by the beginning of May. So I am gathering information as soon as possible. I am pretty familiar with these cars and their turbo options from reading the board for the past couple years, and for the past week I’ve really been screening through the archives.

To answer a couple questions,
I would like to keep the turbo under $1000,
I would obviously like as much hp as possible but am not looking for more than 400rwhp, somewhere in the mid 300’s rwhp is fine though.
Lag is a concern as this car will still be my daily driver and I don’t want a dyno queen. I would love to get full boost by 3000 rpm but I think below 3500 rpm will be acceptable.
I do want something pretty reliable so I don’t plan on running over 20 psi, depending on the turbo 18ish will probably by my limit.

I am currently leaning toward a t04e 50 trim with a stage III turbine inside a turbonetics housing, because it would be all new and I could get it to my house quickly. I haven’t dismissed any options though.

Also I am very interested in peoples results with onset of boost rpms (sometimes refered to as spoolup or lag) and hp and torque of the various turbo’s. So feel free to through out numbers that you have experience with, or even better post dyno sheets. Dyno sheets are most welcome.

Thanks all, and please keep it coming.

Alright, I decided to go with a T04e 50trim/ with a turbonetics stage 3 hotside from Performance Techniques (turbonetics.com). They are only $780 brand new and seem like a great turbo. Now I just have to check out the, too much oil pressure issue. Ahh, more research.

Oh and as a quick sidenote before I order the turbo, does anyone have any experience with the stage 2 hotside or does everyone use the stage 3?

Thanks for all the help everyone,
John

When you say stage 2 or stage 3 hotside, you are referring to the turbine trim (the hotside fans) NOT the housing itself. The hotside housing should be a KKK, or better yet a KKK replica from Turbonetics.

Ahh yes, I guess I should have been more specific. I am refering to stage 2 and 3 turbine trims. I thought about having my KKK #6 machined to accept the Garrett turbine but I decided to go with a turbonetics replica.

The stage 2 would spool up faster than stage 3, for sure.

I know this is an older thread, but I thought i would re-ask John's question of - has anyone tried the stage 2 trim on the hotside?

Also on the hotside - is there any difference between a turbonetics #8 housing with a stage 3 wheel and a #6 housing machined to fit a stage 3 wheel.

In terms of having both fast spoolup and topend, I read good things about t04e 46 with a stage 3 wheel in a machined #6 in other threads, and wonder why so many people seem to go with a #8.

a lot of people go with the #8 because that is the smallest replica housing turbonetics makes. Otherwise you have to (as you stated) have your own housing machined. I looked at the compressor maps and the .50 trim looked to be the money shot for the cold side. It becomes effecient just a hair later than the .46 and stays effecient till just before the .57. In my book that's the best of both worlds.

FYI my t04e, with a .50 trim coldside and stage 3 #8 hotside, hits 1 bar just before 3000 rpms.

John

what confuses me on the T04E setup is that I found at least 4 different maps for it. and they were all of by a few. especially on the .57 trim where it was up to .4 bar off from one another. does anyone know where to find reliable MAP's for the T04E's?
