Default EGT Probe Pics/Info wanted!

I have my head off and it dawned on me (slowly, very slowly) that now would be a good time to install the EGT probe I got with the Zeitronix. For those that have installed the probe, can you post pictures and/or share your approach.

Is a bung needed or will it bite into the header without one?

How do you cut through the heat shield?

What cylinder did you pick and why?

How far away from the head?

Yes, you need to get a hole drilled and a bung welded in. Then it screws into the bung.

So far ive seen #4 cyl (one against the firewall) about an inch or two from the head. #4 cause its the hottest...

Thats where ill be putting my Zeitronix probe.

I made the hole in the pipe just slightly larger than the probe to not disturb flow. If you do not use a bung there will be quite a restriction of flow.
I have caps on the bungs in the picture to not get dirt into the pipes. I plan to use some kind of switch to be able to read log all four EGTs. I am very interested to know if my modified manifold will flow evenly.

And make sure to get a stainless bung. I just used a 1.25 inch hole saw and drilled through the heat shield, easy and clean.

Yep, thats the bung I got Sam, thats what I would recomend Tom, though their shipping was a bit slow when i ordered iirc.
I placed it on the #4 header since, from what I am told, it seems to run the leanest. I placed it about an inch or so away from the head. I had the head of when i did it, and it was off for a while, so i forgot to take into acount the coolant hard line that runs acrsoo there, i had to move the line a bit to make it work...
I took the header and test pipe to an exhaust shop and told em where i want the bungs, handed them the bungs and they put em in. (them being the wideband 02 bung, and egt bung) they did it for 20 bucks.

Make sure they TIG it with stainless filler rod, since it is all stainless you dont want some exhaust monkey slatering on a bunch of mild steel MIG filler rod.

Hey Tom
If you are ordering those bung's I would love to jump on your order and take care of you later.
I need only one for the wide band O2
I assume they are the same size as the EGT ?
thanks
regards
Ed

Ok, my turn to show off.

After I have gotten a dyno baseline on my current configuration, I’ll install the components shown here, which are Huntley stage III head, thermally coated exhaust pipes until and including the down-pipe. The 4 EGT bungs can be seen on top of the headers and two fast reacting EGT’s will be installed on the turbo compressor exit and on the start of the intake manifold respectively.

In the first picture note also the Saturn studs with Torx ends for easy header removal and installation.
The 2nd picture shows my trick K26-6 ready for a temperature sensor (fast EGT) and the last picture shows the EGT’s ready for installation (one more is needed).

Btw, I got the sensors at Exhaust Gas Technologies , who I also visited in Anaheim, CA. The quality of their sensors looks very good and the price was reasonable.

Laust, looking good. I hope to compare water injection results with you this summer. You are still going down that route correct?

Standard O2 bung, any auto parts store or muffler shop will have it in mild steel. Better shops will have it in Stainless - depends what you're welding it to.

If you can't find Stainless locally and need it:
http://www.atpturbo.com/Merchant2/me...egory_Code=FTG

And if it's not a permanent install, but for tuning only (like all of mine):
