Not my cup of tea, but very interesting none the less...

Renegade Hybrids is now doing a 944/968 LS-1 Kit.

Because the aluminium LS-1 is significantly lighter
than the iron-block LT-1 motors, they claim that
the new kit only affects front/rear balance by ~1%.

Here's some info: http://www.renegadehybrids.com/LS-1/...ersionkit.html

"stock turbo 944 owners have dreamt of a big turbo engine upgrade to get that badly needed horse power"

"Finally, the cost! We have had many customers come to us after spending 10’s of thousands of dollars for that “Big Turbo Motor” I referred to previously. Sure, the initial investment into the engine and turbo upgrades to exceed 300+ HP was a moderate $9,000.00"

"Introducing the new General Motors LS-1 all aluminum fuel injected V-8. With over 300 HP, and approaching 350 FPT stock, this abundant late model motor has become our new pick for the 944 conversions"

Did I read that right? We dream of getting that much needed power (300HP seemingly), and some guys spend $9,000 getting it?

The LS-1 kit seems to support power steering (e.g. power steering hoses are $75+core).

I didn't see anything that mentioned manual brakes... Where did you see that?

No power brakes would not be fun

The LS1 kit supports power steering and AC. Plus, an LS1 can easily be modded to 500HP (cam change and ported/polished heads) and still be very reliable and street friendly. Stock, the f-body LS1 (which is what they are using) is rated at 300HP but in reality puts out 350HP just the same as the Vette LS1. My concern with something like this is that the massive torque would grenade the 944 tranny.

The price is on there... for a seemingly stripped version its $2100 and that will get you a 300HP motor, then you have to put it. Or you can spend a few hundred on some chips, MBC, WG and a FPR and get it.

I don't think that price includes the engine.

Definitely not, LS1 crate motors go for around $6000, and even salvage yard LS1s go for $3K or more.

Why should I shoe in an LS1 when I am already faster than a Z06 which has the LS6?

I think I'm hearing voices in my head. Wait! No! Yes! No! YES!

Can you imagine the beast that you can build for 9k? I can, and I'm going too. So here's a pre poll.

3.0 8 valve turbo
or
2.8 over bore turbo

and why?

Thanks Karl. Not my cup either, but it's always interesting to see what's out there. Now back to my hijack!

Sorry, but low mileage LS1 pulls with all accessories and computer are under 2500 shipped all day.

What they sell as a "complete" LS-1 kit is not as complete as it seems if you look at the option list. For what I see, the basic kit is just for the mechanical installation. But there is a lot of things that must be address for proper operation, especially the engine management.

In the long run the LS-1 would be cheaper.....and more reliable. I know it wouldn't be Porsche original, but it would be fast. I know we can mod our cars to get 300 HP...but it wouldn't be as dependable as the LS-1 and wouldn't anywhere near the torque of the LS-1. I have owned LT-1 and LS-1 Firebird Formulas and the LS-1 is a great engine. It revs quick all the way to redline and pulls all the way to redline. I am sure it would destroy a transaxle if driven hard, but a transaxle a year would still be cheaper than regular maintenace on our stock motors.
