Default intercooler?

I have a friend with a turbocharged VW looking for a 951 intercooler. Anyone have one used? What would be the typical price he should expect to pay for one used?

Thanks!

Chris

Why not go to the scrappers & look for a Supra
intercooler instead ?

It is not my car, so I do not know. He asked me to specifically find out information about the 951 intercooler, mainly the price and if anyone had one available.

That's a fair price for the 951 I/C, they go anywhere between 100 and 200 and usually above 150.

J Chen, why would he want a Supra I/C??

Anyone welded up the inlet/outlet of the intercooler to fit AN fittings and used it as an oil cooler? One 911 had this done that was at TWS a few weeks ago. Thoughts...

Behr did exactly that and sold it at a much higher price for the earlier 911s. Overkill, if you ask me.

Good lord how much would that add to your oil change? Regardless though, as Sam said it's overkill. Any decent sized Setrab would be fine and much easier to find a mounting location for.

What about the pressure difference? The intercooler was designed around 15 psi and the oil pressure can easily hit 100 psi when cold and 75 when hot.

A more interesting concept is using a radiator as an intercooler – both function in the same pressure range….big aluminum radiators are much cheaper than intercoolers…

When I cleaned out my I/C, it held A LOT. I think easily 4 liters, if not more.

Sam,
What's wrong with Supra's IC ? His friend wants to
install it in a VW. The reason I mention Supra is
that I can't figure out how he's gonna mount a 951
IC in a VW cause most models that I've seen has
very little space in between the engine & grill.

Why not make an intercooler? Seems to me for about $300.00 you could have a custom made unit to your specs. I am not that impressed with the 951 IC....it is too long in my opinion. Most of the heat transfer is done in the first 6-8" of the core....longer cores mean more pressure loss.
