What are the differences between the 1986 and the 1987+ 951 engines?

Thanks

There is a myth about forged rods, not sure of the outcome...

As in 86 have the 87+ dont always have them

the 87+ ones have belt tensioners which makes tensioning the belt easier...

Only 85-86 models have forged rods. All turbos have forged pistons.

85-86 no automatic belt tension, different kind crossover pipe, a little bit different wastegate body. Also 85-87 models have minor differensies in some external tubing (under intake manifold) and vacuum lines

Are failed rods common on the 951's?

Olli: The manual doesn't specify the year/engine type does it? (not with me now)

Anders, usually no problems with rods, neither with normal or forged.

Hussam, according to factory mechanic training guide Porsche change rods to "normal" starting model year 1987.

I read in clarks garage information that for the '87 951, they changed from the eccentric roller cam belt tensioner to a spring tensioner, they added an oil level sending unit to the oil pan where there is a reddish light in the dash that signifies a level of low oil. Also, the 1986 951s has a three piece oil pressure relief valve unit where in 1987 951s were given a one piece oil pressure unit instead. Also I read that a new set of timing covers were installed. There were also suspension, brake, and intrerior changes too.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, yeah, yeah - bull****. Unless "normal" means forged. I have taken apart a few late 951 motors - ALL 10131100rarst (FORGED).
I want to see a pic of a cast rod coming out of any OEM turbo- that pic doesn't exist, don't bother looking.

Didn't the 86 come standard with an external oil cooler for the transmission??

Hussam- I think your right but hes asking about the engine... There are several other model year differences..
