Default Big Mistake! Advice Please

88, 951 I was removing the wheel to get to the dash lights.....I went to remove the red plug on the back of the airbag and the plug came apart!!! Any advice here ? How far will I have to dig into the steering column to replace the wire and plug? What a nightmare!!!

Time to call a salvage yard and see if the plug is still there. Cut and splice the wire, solder it and use heat shrink. Another alternative would be to bypass the air bag controller all together. You have to splice two wires and then cut two.

I would be leary of splicing those wires. If the current draw was enough to make a difference you could have an exploded air bag at the wrong time. Maybe better off to just bypass the SRS setup.

In theory if I were to leave the airbag on the steering wheel disconnected the central warning light is the only one that would stay on to alert me to a problem with the air bag correct ?

I can check my parts car for this wire. If you leave your battery disconnected a while the airbag system is safe and I seriously doubt you could fire the airbag by splicing on a new connector.

Joel, my concern would be when you powered it back up. If for some reason the wiring made enough change to set if off, I wouldnt want to be in front of it.

I have had the pleasure of blowing a few of these up and I can assure you they pack a punch. The airbag from an Escalade will go about 15 ft off the ground when it explodes (cool, really!!).

I took all of that out, sold it and put a Momo wheel in. I just would rather not have an 18 yr old, first generation air-bag system (explosive) to be stareing me in the face everyday.

And, there should be no current loss through a soldered splice, none whatsoever.

And yes, the $100 bill comment was a bit intimidating. It's a common thing among those who fix cars with their checkbook.

I am up for the challenge......I can solder like there is no tomorrow so that should not be a problem. I think when I re-attach it I'll just keep my face away when I turn the key on for the 1st time......

JFrahm if you don't mind checking your parts car I will gladly pay whatever you think is fair for the wire and plug as well as postage.

Thank you

OK it looks like that connector is wired to the clockspring assembly (the thing that allows the steering wheel to turn while maintaining airbag and horn button connections.) You could either replace the clockspring (no big deal with the wheel off) or splice the connector onto your wires. I'm assuming the connector on the airbag itself is OK?

Default You got it

except I need the red plastic plug and wire from the back of the airbag going to the console. That plug came apart on mine and there is a mini magnetic coil inside and I dont' want to try and re-assemble it!

OK well I can cut that connector off my clockspring and you can splice the brown/white and blue/white wires or you can dig into the dash and replace the entire clockspring. The only tough part there is that you have to pull the cluster to get to the clockspring connector.
