Default Oil pan baffle update?

I did a search but I didn't see the answer I was looking for. I have the oil pan off right now on my '86 951 and I cracked the plastic baffle (or windage tray). Has anyone updated their '86 cars with the '89 baffle? Does it fit? I also plan on sending out my pan & pick up tube to Lindsey for their updates. I also plan on doing the rod bearings since I'm in there.

Thanks-Rob

Hi Rob,

Just got my oil pan back from Lindsey with the baffle mod.

It's the thing at the bottom with the three rivets. They didn't ship it back with the plastic baffle. I've talked to several shops and they have told me that once the baffle is in place you no longer need the plastic thing.

It's a straight swap. Don't forget to also change the oil dipstick tube to the 1989 part as it goes with the oil pan.

I am using a similar weld in baffle, but I also used the late style plastic baffle. Why would you not use the plastic baffle ? that would allow oil to move to the left side of the pan on hard turns, just like you are trying to prevent with the weld in baffle on the right side ? Is my logic wrong here ?

Whats the deal with the dipstick tube? I just got an 89' and I'm not aware of this.

The early 951 oilpans take 6.5 liters, the later ones take 7 liters.

alexands, I just got off the phone with Dave at LR. You do need the black plastic baffle so perhaps you need to call LR.

Perform a search on the forum for more information.

Basically if you install a later model oil pan on an older model block you also need to change over the dipstick tube and dipstick. It's not possible to mix up the old and new model dipsticks and tubes...the earlier ones are flat with a twist, the later ones are round - AFAIK neither will fit in the wrong dipstick tube.

Thanks all. Looks like I'm going to keep my '86 pan, get the LR baffle kit, and buy a new '89 plastic baffle tray.

UPDATE: Thanks to John Vitesse's kindness, he contacted Lindsey regarding my oil pan windage tray (the plastic thing). Lindsey in turn contacted me and turns out I do, in fact, need that. It was an oversight on Lindsey's part for which they apologized and took full responsibility for. I'm working with them now to get things resolved. However, I will not be posting any of the details about the resolution out of respect for Lindsey.

That just goes to show you want a great bunch folks exist in our close knit 951 community.

Thanks again to John V.

Scott
