Default Oil cooler thermostat removal

Hi Guys,
I was wondering if it's possible to remove
the thermostat & run an external one.
If so, do I remove everything that's in there
or do I just remove the thermo.

Thanks

If you want to run external, I would remove everything.

I thought about it, even bought a Mocal thermostat to run inline when I installed the Mocal oil cooler, but in the end stayed with the stock thermostat.

Hi David,
Thanks. I think my thermo is malfuntioning. I've
installed an RX7 oil cooler. Funny thing about it
is that after some hard driving, the cooler does
not feel warm at all. When I place my hand on the
inlet pipe of the oil cooler, it just feels warm. I'm
thinking that the thermo is not fully open which is
not flowing enough hot oil to the cooler.
What about your car, does the cooler feels warm ?
Lastly, are you very sure that I should remove
everything ?

Thanks again David

I can't touch my cooler, have the sides covered and the front is protected with mesh.

Am I very sure ?? well if it were me I would remove it, bit you may want other opinions, I would not want the stock thermostat in there if it was not working correctly and if it is working correctly then why the need for external ?

Is the thermostat located in the oil filter housing?

The thermostat is in the housing under the round cap with the large allen socket. I am running without mine and have had no trouble, but will have to cover the cooler for street use in cold weather.

J chen. You can remove the stock thermostat completetly and run a Mocal (or other brand) external unit. I run my Mocal front mount oil cooler with both (well functioning) thermostat (stock and Mocal), and I never get temps higher the 205 F during a 30min track session.

I have a friend who had the same problem as you.His stock thermostat was completetly stuck in the closed position. he had to change the whole oil/cooler housing, cause he wasn't able to remove the thermostat....it was so badly stuck. So you could be having the same problem, but to a lessser degree.

Hi Guys,
Sorry about this. I just need to reconfirm this.
Do I just remove the thermo or do I remove
everything else that's with the thermo as well ?

Thanks

Remove it all and put cap back on, if you go external

If you remove the oil thermostat, most of the oil will bypass the oil cooler, stock or otherwise.

j chen. I'm doing fine. You can reach me at sales@europartsetc.com

Actually. I think that fotysixandtwo has a good point. If you remove the whole thermostat assembly, you might not be flowing enough oil through the cooler, since you will have two holes oppen at the same time....one going back to the engine and the other going to the cooler..

So it might be best to run it like I am, with a good working stock thermostat.

Hey MySwiss,
If memory serves me correctly, the return oil hole
to the engine is not located with the thermo assembly.
Yes there are 2 holes but one is from the engine &
the other goes out to the oil cooler. Can you check your
pet & help confirm this please ?

Thanks
