Default Is Aviation Fuel OK

Is Aviation Fuel OK to use?

I've found 100 Octane fuel available up at the local airport, and it's much less than the race fuel you can purchase at the track.

But, I was told that it is 'slightly' leaded...

Is there really such a thing? I've got to use 100 Octane un-leaded and I don't know if this stuff is OK to use.

Can anybody tell me?

Thanks,

Jason

Low-Lead Av Gas has a low content of lead, it's very stable.. If your car is tuned to run on av-gas you are fine. If you mix av-gas with pump gas you might be ok. Running av-gas by itself, and not having the car tuned for it, will cause damage (don't ask how I found out years ago!).

The density of av-gas is about .63 while automotive gas is .73 (I don't remember the exact densoty). Runnig direct Av-gas (not a mix) will cause the car to run lean. However if you tune the car on av-gas you will be fine.. (Of course the low0lead will harm the O2 sensor, Wideband and the cat-converter).

A nice 50/50 mix should be ok.

How mcu his it at your airport??? As I have a private airport real close and might look into it if it is a lot cheaper then Xylene.

Absolutely not. Aviation fuel is intended for a low-oxygen environment and will lead to much higher combustion temperatures. The blue fuel (most common) is what's known as 100LL (low lead); this is NOT the same as "no lead" auto gas. Keep the avgas in the planes and find a good race fuel unless you don't mind melting your pistons and cat converter.

JJ:
You shouldn't double post, it wastes band width.
Aviation fuel WILL NOT work in your car.

Who double-posted? That's awfully bossy coming from someone that isn't even a member. . .

We run Av gas all the time... fill the car up before the drags to run more boost. I wont run it again because... its screws the O2. I need a lead tolerant one, yet to find one that is suitable.

It's not just the lead content you have to worry about. Avgas has different additives than Mogas. The sulfur content is different, for one. Do a search, the car will run on the stuff but the longterm harm outweighs the shorterm savings in money.

I use one gallon of xylene for every 10 gallons of pump gas, is a very simple way to increase your octane #'s.

Take this kind of elitist BS elsewhere, we don't need it here. He wasn't even referring to you. He was referring to how Jason posted this question here and on the Racing forum.

Just as much bandwidth is wasted by telling other people how to act; keep in mind that this IS a forum intended to PROMOTE (not discourage) discussion about these cars and issues related to them. If you don't like that, then start your own board and you can discourage people all you want from posting there.

I don't want to speak for John D. (Admin) but I suspect he'd want people to feel free to speak up and share their stories (that IS why this forum exists. . .) rather than sit on their hands for fear of getting flamed by someone that won't even support the forum and its bandwidth-related costs. Besides, the more posts / hits a site has, the more it can charge for ads. This site has very few (since member fees defray the costs somewhat) and because John D. is nice enough to support the site on his own rather than having ad banners and popups all over the place. . .

BTW not much bandwidth is wasted in a post; it's purely text unless you add a lot of images, sounds, etc. to it.

Have a nice day.
