Question Non-start diagnosis

Car still won't start after installing new & upgraded DME relay.

Cranks with fuel flow, boost gauge needle moves, but tach does not move. No spark.

This happened upon changing WG shims and DME & KLR chips. Put old chips back in, still no start or sputter.

Resoldered obvious joints in DME and KLR, with no start or sputter.

Likely causes? Best fixes?

Please advise, and thanks!

Try wiggling the crank position sensors at the back of the engine...
search for more info...

I agree with turbit, if while cranking the tachometer doesnt move at all, then a few sensors may need 'wiggling' or replacement.

Were you sure to line up the notches on the chips with the notches in the board? Did you swap the chips on the install? I'm not implying youi're an idiot, but sometimes we overlook the obvious.

Chips were installed correctly. I will go check the sensors.

Thanks,
Eric

Question

Is there any way a wastegate malfunction or vacuum leak could cause the car not to start?

No a W/G or vacuum leak will let it start.. What are you missing from the combustion cycle. Fuel, spark, air? Did you try swapping your old DME relay back in?

Yes, I put old chips, DME relay, etc. correctly back in, but had put stuff in correctly to begin with (chips notch to notch, etc.), so the odds seem low that both sets of chips are suddenly bad.

I've been trying in vain to find somebody with an '86 to '88 951 near here (NW Washington State or Vancouver, BC area) who has a good working car and who'd let me put my DME and KLR in it, to see if my units are working.

In my case, the no start problem turned out to be the KLR. I had fuel but no spark. I resoldered the KLR and still didn't work. Another used one fixed the problem. If you cannot find a sensor problem, see if you can borrow some computers to swap.
