Default For Sale: 944 Turbo Escort/Cup Transmission

Spoke with a guy last night that is selling a complete transmission that is out of a US Spec ’87 944 Turbo Club Sport (Escort Car).

It is the original transmission to the car and has steel synchro rings and a locking limited slip differential.

He also has few spare steel synchro rings that he is selling either w/ the trans or separately.

As far as price/value, he paid somewhere around $150-160 ea. for the synchro rings and just wants his money out of them.

For the trans, keeping in mind what a standard Turbo S transmission goes for, a custom built locking diff, the price of the steel synchros, and possibly some added value for a drive train component off a unique factory motorsport car, I think he would entertain any realistic offer.

Sorry about being vague. Im not trying to broker or be the middle man on a sales deal, just passing on information for a friend. There hasn’t been anyone local (parts are in MN) that is interested, so he asked if I knew of anyone that would want it. I thought I would send the word out.

Thanks

Hi
Is this trannie in Michigan, what part? I may be interested at the right price. I know somebody who brings 80' Containers back from USA and I may be able to get it back in one
Can you get a price out of him?

Cheers

Speaking of cool transmissions . . . look at the "951 Racing" box listed in the Classifieds. I was speaking with the owner today(I picked up a bumper from him) and it sounds rediculous. Custom short 3rd, 4th and 5th.

In his Rothmans Turbo it'd hit 150mph on the straight at Summit Point(6200rpm in the short 5th) A stock turbo like mine will maybe top 4th, ~130mph

Damn, if I could get away with it in "E" I'd be all over that box

My timing on this was terrible too. Just a year ago I spent big $ on a turbo S trans, rebuilt/replaced and bearings and synchros, and custom shimmed higher % locking diff. Its very easy to spend $3k on an LSD trans and rebuild, and here this one is with some interesting history to boot.

So there is no confusion, this trans is an aluminum case and has the standard turbo ratios, so it is legal for PCA stock class cars. I have heard that some of the Turbo Cup cars had magnesium cases, but the alum. is correct for the US Escort cars.

I had spoke with Powerhaus II a few years ago about their gear sets. At the time, they had a 3-5th gear set package that was for turbo transmissions with the 3.375 rear end. It supposedly made the final drive in 3-5th the same as the S2 with the 3.875 r/p. That alone would not make for a 20 mph difference at the end of any straight, must be a significant horsepower and exit speed difference also. I recall the set was about $1200, but could be wrong.

Tom: Trans is in Minnesota. If you want to PM me your contact info I can pass it on.

I wasnt positive of the price, it was 5 years ago when I talked to them. I might have been remembering $1200 per gear pair, or there's been a lot of inflation....

I have run with a couple 944Ts on the track that have had the S2 ring and pinion in them. You definitely can notice the difference in acceleration. With equal powered cars, same exit speed out of a corner, they probably have around 5 miles an hour on me at the end of a 1 mile straight.

But its also very easy to check for. All a scrutineer needs to do is drive the car and check engine rpm versus mph. A standard Turbo should be around 2300 rpm in 5th gear at 60mph. If its closer to 2700-2800rpm, it has the 3.875 R/P in it. It can be checked in any gear, just with the basic gearing charts in the owner maunal.

I knew I was going to get asked for the case code. I was curious about it myself but I forgot to look at it when I was there. I will try to get the code. AOR is also the case code on Turbo S transmissions.

I know this is a point of contention, but the owner stated that it has the standard gearing in it, which is why its no longer in the car (replaced with an S2 box) and he has owned two other 944 Turbos (so he should know the difference).

To check they would have to take the original spec tire compared to the gearing vs. what is being run on the car and correct. Believe me they don't do that. I know of a D stock 951 turbocup that ran a 6 speed for a few years. He even won events and never had a problem.
The only way to check is to pull 5th gear and check ratios.
Your buddy should be so lucky as to have the Cup transmission with the lower 5th gear. Until I hear the 5th gear teeth number I will not be convinced this is a Cup/Escort trans.

I know that scrutineers dont check for gearing changes, especially in certain classes, but they certainly dont check for horsepower cheaters either. My point is: if they chose to do so, it is very possible and not difficult. And I have also heard a scrutineer tell a fellow PCA Club Racer this technique for checking gears while we were having our log books stamped at a club race last year.

Sure tire diameters affect the final drive, but significantly less than an S2 ring and pinion does. For a 24.5" OD tire, standard Turbo 0.8286 5th gear and a standard 3.375 r/p would be 2302 rpm at 60 mph, a 25.4" OD tire would be 2220 rpm. For a 3.875 r/p in 5th would be 2643 rpm at 60 mph w/ a 24.5" tire, 2549 rpm with 25.4" OD tire. Any stock turbo running much more than about 23-2400 rpm in 5th at 60mph would be very suspect.

And I know you don’t believe that any Cup or Escort cars had standard gearing, we have disagreed on the topic previously.

There seems to be evidence and other owners that agree that at least many of the Cup/Escort car versions had standard gearing.

So how much does he want for the tranny & cooler? I need a LSD turbo tranny & cooler within the next couple of weeks, so am definitely interested. (Am doiing the LT-1 conversion of my 944 as we speak.)

Or, if you don't know price, how do I contact him?

Thanks

Canuck
