Bad time to happen
I just noticed a leak at the bottom of my car.I went to see where its coming from and I find its the lower balance shaft rear seal.Does anyone know the easiest way to change this seal or do I have to take it all appart, and pull the ballance shaft out as well.Anyone who has done this please help.

This one is a real PITA when everything is on. Jim(jwl) had this happen on his street car. He cleaned it with brake cleaner VERY clean, then dabbed high temp silicon on it, smoothed it out, and no leak to this date. Yes it's rigged but it beat taking everything off.

I was under the car while it was running and I saw the rear seal was bobbing in and out.I dont know how thats possible. One thing for sure the higher the rpm the more oil that comes out.So Jim just put silicon over the seal, did anyone ever notice it bobs in and out like the shaft is going in and out.

well it's just a wafer disc. The disc has a groove in it for the o-ring which holds it in place. It does move a bit if you push on it, even when new.

Bill.... I have the same problem... I thought it was the oil pan gasket.... I jacked the car up and looked under it when running...I noticed the same fluttering/bobbing on the rear disc looking thing. I too would like to know how much is involved....

I've been resealing the rear balance shaft cover for a few years now with high temp rtv and it works very well. Its a major PITA to pull the balance shaft cover with the engine in the car, imo.
For a "kludge" repair, this one works very good, and is the proper way to do it unless you have the engine out rebuilding it, and even then, I think its a good idea to seal it with rtv on the outside.

i have a pic of mine on another thread... the thread is actually titled oil pan gasket replacement, but I found out it is the balance shaft seal....
SH944. how long does the sealant work.... do you just apply liberally around the disc cover? mine flutters....it that going to affect the sealant? or will the sealant stop it from fluttering... Will I need to clean it very very well with acetone? any other recomendations?

I had noticed an oil leak in my car devloping so I checked the torque on the oil pan bolts (that I could get to) and one was finger tight on one of the corners that was leaking. Tightened it up (with an inch pound torque wrench) and havent noticed any new drips. We will hope it isnt the front lower ballance shaft seal.

Thanks for all info guys.I think I will seal it up with silicon or rtv for a bit maybe long enough to get a dyno sesion in.I will be pulling the motor in the near future I just did not think the future is now.
