Default substitute to balance shaft spanner wrench

doing belts, and have hit an impass.

cant undo the balance shaft rollers to take off the back cover to get to the seals. about to order the wrench for $50 bucks from Pelican, but was wondering if anyone has another option... maybe someone in the dallas area has one I can borrow for a few days.

I tried fabricating my own, but it just couldnt hold up to the torque that these things are set in there with. Have a nice drawing if someone wants to make their own out of steel or something - 5 layers of Al sheet stiffened with angle iron didnt work. maybe 1/4 inch steel would work.

Also, are the pulleys indexed to make re-alignment easy? if not, how do I keep them aligned?

TIA,
Ian

you can use 2 correctly sized punches stuck in the holes, then pry on them with a big prybar.

What I do usually is just loosen one or both when the belt is still attatched to the crankshaft pulley.

If this doesnt work I take the belt off, and wedge a prybar into something convenient and the sprocket to hold it. Hard to explain.

I know it is possible without the tool, you just have to be creative.

Arnnworx wrenches are cheap alternative and works well, in my opinion. Of course, borrowing one from someone is even cheaper!

Just get the Arnnworx kit, you end up using every tool in it and it's reasonably priced, plus he seems to ship instantly.

Here's what I did. Take some vise grips like these http://store.yahoo.com/tylertool/vis1212locpl.html, wrap a piece of leather around the teeth of the pulley so you don't scuff them up. Clamp down on the pulley and loosen the bolt. Takes about 10 seconds.

good idea alexands, I thought of doing something like that but didnt have vice grips big enough.

How did you tighten them once the belt was on though?

I built one for myself.

Take a rectangle of steel, 2" wide or so. I made mine a foot long for the leverage, I wouldnt go much shorter than this. At one end drill a hole large enough for the OD of your socket for the nut on the sprocket. IIRC its a 17MM nut. On either side of that, drill two small holes for two bolts. Fiddle around to find the biggest bolt that will fit into the holes in the sprocket. Get two nuts for each bolt (4 total) and double nut them, as such a length that they go as far into the sprocket holes as you can get them to go, but so that the nut is poking into the large hole in the "spanner". Then crank away.

This worked for me after I found some good solid bolts.

In a pinch, stick two 1/4" drill bits in opposite holes. Put a box wrench on the nut and a prybar through the drills. The drill bits may bend but will get the job done.

Mark: Good question. I haven't put it back together yet.

I suppose it could work without a problem. Failing that I'll go with 2 drill bits in each spanner hole.
