Default exhaust size/ muffler question

When I bought my 88 944 turbo, the muffler had been broken off. The exhaust piping is in fair condition, but there is no muffler. Is there any benefit to upgrading the entire exhaust system to say, a custom 3" with a aftermarket muffler? I've heard of some people using a Flowmaster.. would a simple flowmaster (40 series?) with my stock piping work? I was just wondering what my options were.

thanks!
Jim

Yep, especially just getting the cat out of there will make a big difference.

Ok guys, what is better/recommended:

1) Removing cat keeping current stock pipes

2) Replacing system with full 3" (stock is 2.5")

Would there be any difference (minor say 5~10hp or major like 20+hp) ?

Sounds like a truck with the flowmaster, I replaced mine with a the biggest straight through I could fit. Now almost stock quiet and flows more (had to turn down my boost controller to bring it back to 15psi).

hally,
What brand and size muffler did you end up with? Oval or round? I would like to get a straight through muffler design, but don't want it loud or wraspy. I've been eyeing the MagnaFlow series, but don't know what length, shape or size.

krickman, ended up with an oval 3inch straight through muffler, seemed to be a generic / no name brand made here in Aus. Bigger + heavier (more packed fibres) == quieter was the advice given to me on the straight through design by my local 'muffler man'.
