Why do you think Porsche did this?

The hood liner insulation pad was standard on all 944's from 86+. Untill a specific year, later 944's did NOT come with one. Anyone know why? safety? fire?
I removed mine (filled with oil and crumbling), now i can hear the injectors louder.

Why they removed it? It was supposedly eliminated for MY1989 but there are some cars that still have it. The only thing I can think of is that they recognized the problem with the old foam flaking off and getting everywhere.

Yeah, they deleted it on all 89- 944's. Why? The cars didn't need them, dead weight?
Having driven with both an insulated hood, and one without it, I personally love the engine noise you get from an uninsulated hood.
Matt,
This may seem like a stupid question, but what does MY1989 stand for?
I've heard it a lot, but never had the ***** to ask

MY = model year and not ALL MY1989s came without, I have seen a few that had it stock. I was under the same impression you were that is was deleted for MY1989 but it appears that, like everything else on these cars, some made it through with a "rare" option.

I took off mine, engine noise is louder
which i wasn't used to.
I am considering placing a thermal one under there, instead of the stock one

My '88 TS also didn't have the hood insulation. My original window sticker on that was $50,000, this is 1988 USD, so I doubt it was a cost cutting move. I believe it was engine bay heat and letting the bare hood act as a big heat sink. Though crumbling insulation all over everything would make sense but the cars weren't that old back when they deleted the insulation so no one knew exactly how big a mess that made.

I took mine off, but lazied out and still have to remove the adhesive. Who did that the easiest and cleanest? I do it when i replace the hood shocks.

Place some newspapers or some OLD bedsheets (basically something BIG that you wouldn't need again) and cover the WHOLE engine with it.
Get a scraper (what ever its called, that weird flat tool they use to apply plaster when painting) and start removing the old stuff off.
Then with some thinner or any other powerful thing, remove the adhesive/glue.
If you are planning on NOT adding a new hood liner, apply wax to the hood (from the inside!).
