Default Headlights going nuts!

With the car on or off my headlights are going up a nd down in a circular motion and won't stop! The lights are not on but the headlight motor runs continuously. I ended up pulling the fuse. What the hell is happening?

My car did the same thing last week. I have no idea what is happening as well. If anybody has any info/solution on this issue, I would greatly appreciate it as well.

My guess is that it may be a relay.

Thanks,

Michel

I would imagine a stuck relay could cause this. Check the relay near the headlight motor. I believe you can swap it with one of the ignition relays from the fusebox to check.

A bad relay and check for bad ground. My friend's 944 NA was doing this after he shutdown, light went up and down 3 times. Turned out bad grounds, but try changing the relay first

The "herbie" effect is caused by dirty contacts on the relay. You can pull the relay and take it apart to clean, but they are pretty cheap - around $18. As such, I'd recommend just buying another, but I just cleaned mine and it's been fine ever since. The relay was not designed to be disassembled, but it can be done. Once in there, run a business card edge soaked with a bit of lighter fluid between the contacts. Make sure the lighter fluid has evaporated, then snap it back together and test.

When you say bad ground... are you refering to the ground in the Relay internals? Or some other wire that is connected to the Chassis?

Ok, I tried the grounds up front near the headlights, and also replaced the relay, still does it! I have many extra grounds from the battery to the body, battery to engine and body to engine. For now I just yanked the relay cause I don't drive it at night, but Wed through Sat I have a big project on the EVO and will be using the Porsche as a daily driver(still faster after 2nd gear than the EVO!!). Is there a ground I can get to that is for the fuse box? I can't think of anything else.

If you just pull the connector at the headlight motor, you can then hand cycle (using the **** under the condom) the headlights to the up or down position and leave it there.

My experience is that it is either the relay located on the headlight motor or the motor itself which causes these problems.

Could be one or more grounds from the head lights, or check their wires for any exposed/corroded ones.
