Default Need help with turbo install

So I bought a rebuilt 944 turbo OEM unit from 944 Online and I’m trying to get everything put back together.

I have the turbo in the car set in place with nothing tighten down as of yet

However, when I try to install the two bolts from below into the underside of the turbo, they are off by about 3/16 of an inch. I’m trying to do this by myself and I cannot find a way to get these bolts to align up

does anybody have any suggestions on how to do this? It doesn’t seem like there be a whole lot of reasons why these holes would not line up, what could be off? Or what do I need to do to align them?

is there a way that if the turbo was rebuilt, it could be built in such a way where these holes would not a line?

attached is a picture of the bottom flange of the turbo. You can see the marring where the bolts have hit the flange and aligned. You can also see the O-ring making its mark as well to see how off it is from center.

Hey there,

You may have to clock the turbo center section, loosen the bolts on the hot and cold side and twist the center until it lines up, You may have to see if there's a video on you tube to help you.

Clocking it would rotate it along is central access, I agree, but it wouldn’t necessarily shift it laterally left or right would it?

yes it will shift laterally if either hot or cold side housing is making contact with the block, turbo mount, heat sheilds etc, unless there is something else drastically different on one of the housings on the replacement unit

Is it simply a matter of loosening the bolts and rotating the housing then retightening them or do you have to have a special jig set it on?

assuming I do loosen them what torque spec do you tighten them to.

very straight forward, yes, don't be scared. loosen and adjust and don't forget to tighten one you have you clocking as desired.

I've never seen one but it's not hard. Loosen the bolts around the circumference of the hotside and you will see that you can rotate the housing. Connect the full exhaust and find the optimum angle for the input flange of the turbo. Begin to snug up the full exhaust path from the manifold at the head to the turbo. When you are satisfied that you've got it as closely aligned as you can then tighten everything. The lower turbo clamping bolts on the housing are difficult to reach. A "C" or "S" type obstruction wrench here can be your savior.
