K27...Is there any point?
I've been presented with the opportunity to purchase a low mileage K27/6 for an attractive price. I know that it is a coveted turbocharger to the 951 owners, but I was wondering if if will be worth the trouble for me. I'm running the stock k26/6 and my goal is to get it properly dialed in at 15psi. So will there be a difference in HP output between a k27 and a K26 if they both push 15psi? I can't help to think no, since 15Psi is 15Psi but you never know with newer turbos being more efficient. I've seen dyno charts comparing the two turbos, but only at higher boost (18-20psi). Are there any side by side dynos running just 15psi?

15psi is 15psi, yes, but 15psi with one turbo will _flow_ differently than 15psi with another turbo.
In this specific comparison, I'm not sure what the difference will be at 15 psi (especially since they both have the /6 hotside), but I'm sure there will be some difference.
btw, If its really cheap, I may be interested. (edit: I'll PM you)

At 15psi, the K26 runs out of steam around 4800rpm. The K27 flows enough till redline.. Spoolup may be a bit slower, but not by much if tuned correctly.
Tuning will play a big role in how well you car runs.. Of course less restriction in front of the turbo helps spoolup as well.

My K26/8 at 15psi made about 270hp to the wheels.
My K27/8 at 15psi makes 330hp to the wheels.
That being said, there is some additional fuel and tuning that must be done differently between the turbos, so the large gain is not specifically from the turbo change. You'll get about 20% more flow from the K27 vs the K26.
Good turbo.

I recently replaced my 26/6 with a 27/6-7200, Guru Chips, Tial 38mm & MBC. Boost builds earlier and pulls (much) harder longer than with the 26/6. NO LAG!!! I've run the car at 20psi several times, but keep it dialed back to 18psi until I can commit to do a head gasket. The engine seems tame at 15psi with the 27/6, with the 26/6 @ 15psi all hell was breaking loose.
IMHO.....the turbo replacement job is not as difficult as some listers make it out to be. If the deal is that sweet I'd buy the 27/6 bolt it on and try it out for yourself! You will love it. Be sure to budget for chips. With the added HP my car is now making, the clutch was the weak link. It failed last week.

Thanks Perry! When you say additional fuel, how do people typically accomplish this? I know you can easily get bigger injectors, but by staying at 15psi I was hoping to avoid this. Will a 3Bar FPR be good enough?

Since you are going with GURU chips, telling Danno what turbo you are running- he should be able to set up a fuel curve more appropriate to the K27 turbo. The best way to accomplish this is a piggyback fuel control, ala ARC2 or SMT6.

I highly recommend the K27/6. In my car 15psi with the 26/6 made 250 rwhp and 280ftlbs. The K27 made 290 with 300 ft/lbs. There is virtually no lag difference. The K26 set up well will have a nice punch at spool-up and then tail off. Makes it feel like a good mometary kick. The K27 hits not quite as hard initially, but it never falls off. The speedo just keeps climbing and with upshifts there is no discernable change in acceleration- it is constant!
My recommendations is to look at torque curves. The K26/6 always peaks fast and then drops quickly. The K27/6 is more of a plateau. You will love the K27/6. If you pass, let someone else on the list get it!

I am all for a bigger compressor..properly thought of in regards to the car's setup of course..the thing is with smaller compressors vs bigger ones is that even if they both push say 15 psi the smaller compressor has to turn at higher rpms, there by thrashing the air more and heating it up versus a bigger compressor....hence my love for my T04E..thank you vitesse

What have you done to help the mass-misunderstanding on rennlist about the difference between psi and flow?
