Default Clutch slave cylinder starting to go bad?

Well I thought right before I order a clutch, I might as well ask this. My clutch pedal will press in fine and then when the pedal comes back to my foot, it stops about 1/2 way, and then sticks for a second of two and then comes fully out. I do not know when the last time the brakes were bled, but I figure it somethings wrong, it can just be fixed while the clutch is being done. Any help would be great. Thanks

well lucky me, just got home and i think the clutch slave went bye bye. As soon as i got into the driveway, the clutch pedal stuck on the floor, but i pushed it as far as i could and managed to get it in the garage. Pretty sure thats what's wrong with it.

The clutch also has its own master cylinder separate from the brake cylinder.

Like the clutch slave, this also can go bad. When I have seen clutch slaves fail, usually you just get a fluid leak. But when the master goes, the clutch pedal drops to the floor. It is the clutch master that applies the force to return the clutch pedal and not the slave.

When the clutch master cylinder goes bad, it also can leak brake fluid into the cab and soak the carpet. Not a pretty thing as brake fluid will remove paint, carpet dye, shoe dye, etc.

The clutch master is located inside the engine compartment on the right side of the brake booster. There is a blue rubber line that provides brake fluid from the brake resevour to the clutch master. It has a rod that penetrates the fire wall and attaches to the clutch pedal. It is a real pain to remove.

You should do them both if you haven't had one replaced recently. From what I've heard, it's likely the other is not far behind.

Well, I'm having my clutch done as soon as I get back from Germany. I'm assuming thats a good time to replace the cylinders since it will all be apart.

Yeah, the old "Hey, where'd my clutch pedal go?" trick. Do them both and get it over with.

I just replaced the maste cylinder...not too hard if you undo all the hoses in the way and get down there with a 3/8" universal joint with a 1/2" socket...its easy to do...my problem is the slave, which seems easy enough, just can't get the FU&@$!@ starter off to get to the slave...stupid bolts

No luck with the jack-handle breaker bar?

Hi there
If you press the clutch while reverse gear is on let it come - roll an press it again and drive backwards - is the clutch pedal being stock?
I personally experienced the connection between master and slave cylinder beeing defect and bleeding very little - so there was also a loss of fluid but no so fast that I would have investigated where the fluid goes. So maybe it could be your connection hose. You can only check it when starter is removed (if I remember correctly) - but check your brake fluid level first!
kind regards Frank

Last Sunday after a spirited day of driving, all of the sudden my '88 would not go into gear. After some research, I decided to replace the line between the master & slave and the slave cylinder. I had clutch for one day, went out Wed morning and no clutch! Replacing the master today of tomorrow. The collective wisdom agrees the both the master & slave seem to fail at the same time. BTW.........it was a big PITA to bleed that slave!!! Pre-bled on the bench before the install and it still took 2 hours and 3/4 a liter of fluid to get it bled. Made my wife cry--her left leg hurt so bad.
I followed this link: [URL=http://www.bmw-m.net/TechProc/bleeder.htm]
and made a pressure bleeder for $20, got everything from Lowes. Should make the bleeding process much easier.
