Thanks Mike.

This is a shot Tom Seabolt, ( 86 Team Manager for Porsche Motorsport)
sent me of the car outside P.M.N.A. the day it arrived from Germany
August 7th 1986, according to copys I have of his dayplanner notes.

Not a great close up, but I'm glad to have it. The small sign on the
building door reads Holbert Racing. P.M.N.A. was located in a building
at Al Holbert's Porsche Dealership in warrington Pa.. Holbert was
not only a Factory driver, but also Director of Porsche Motorsport
North America at that time.

Just a cool snapshot I thought you guys might like to see.

I just rememberd a guy I was talking with a few months back
was doing some research for a book or museum on Al Holbert
and racing or something like that.
He came across this old photo and E-mailed it to me.

The Holbert family with their way cool home made Porsche Jackets
at a weekend event sometime in late 1950s?

I Believe Al is the kid at the wheel of the RSK spyder.

Sean, keep those pics coming. I agree with George that: A. you need more, and higher quality digital pics, and that B. Koda would look a lot more cool if'n he talked **** to people who didn't know better.

LOVE the history lessons, Sean. The IMSA GTP series was rising to it's height when I was about 10-13. Holbert was one of my first non-motorcycling idols (Bob Hannah, Kenny Roberts, et al.). I remember the ads for the 928 speed record, not to mention the Escort/ Playboy Cup cars.

Per your question; while I don't think anyone would knock a rare race car in it's "as-found" condition, the perfectionist in me wouldn't wanna show it or drive it til she was DONE. By the way, it doesn't cost money to start remmoving parts and stripping paint- just time. Lord knows if I lived in SC, I'd volunteer my time. Peace, man. Keep the pics comin'...

Wow, very very cool. Please keep the pics coming. I can't believe you found it and purchased it for all of 2k. What a awesome find and try not to let the 40post non member trolls get you down. You got a sweet car one that we would all kill to own. If I lived anywhere near you I would love to help with the rebuild. Maybe you can bring her out to 944fest whenever you are done. I'd pay for a ride!!!!!

Porschehead: I am so jealous.

I grew up loving these cars and following Rothmans series races and I would kill for this piece of history.... Since I can't have it I am glad its in the hands of someone that appreciates it for what it is.

P.S You have to love that bill of sale...... traded in a 77 320i.

He's probably recovering from a wild night in a twin turbo 924...

I got to thinking about this deal last night. Let's just say for a moment that Sean's car is NOT what it is. Included with the purchase are a set of 16" Fuchs AND 16" magnesium phones. It has factory manual windows and doorlocks (something most track heads WANT), sunroof delete, thin-glass rear hatch and windshield, a Matter cage (probably not one of THOSE laying around anywhere), and so on.

All THAT, plus a car that's complete for 2 grand. The parts alone would probably net a BIG ole profit, if one were so inclined. So even to that extent, it's a screamin' deal! Let alone the fact that it's MISTER Al Holbert's test-mule/ race car.

Again, Sean, keep rockin' out the pics and the history lessons and so on. Peace.

Ref. Taylorsea4: My car only has 16"x 8" & 9" Fuchs as Factory equipped. The later Turbo cup cars came with magnesium phone dials of a different offset as the later cars had ABS brakes. My brakes are vented but not cross drilled. I have not run the part #s on the breaks but someone said they looked larger than stock for a 951, like 928 calipers? I'll have
to investigate that further.

Photo at Road Atlanta 1987 on display in infield. Note Hella driving lights.
In Mosport photos, (at begining of this thread) see wires hanging out of two holes for driving lights forward of hood. I have loosened screws and looked under panel in front of hood, holes still there filled in from top. PIAA was one of original sponsors on rothmans car. Will try to locate pair of PIAA 8" round driving lights for the car. If someone has a used pair
let me know.

AlexE: Your right, I do truely appreciate the car. I, as perhaps some of you , have dreamed for the last 20 years or so about stumbeling across a Porsche Factory race car, 550spyder or a 917 in a barn or in a basement somewhare.

Well that didn't quite happen, but I'd say this is as close as I'll ever
come. The day I found the car I felt like I won the lottery, not as far as
cash value but just stumbeling onto a historically significant Factory race car.
I meam what are the odds.....very very very slim.

Recap:

1. Porsche AG test Development Car.

2. Escort Endurance 951 (1 of 7).

3. Porsche Motorsport North America owned and campaigned.
The other 6 were sold to privateers (dealers or independent-
race teams).

4. Driven by Factory driver Al Holbert( Not sure if Bill Adam is
also a factory driver).

5. The car ran Al Holberts #14.

6. The same full Rothmans livery that the 1986 Factory Racing 959s
and 962s ran.

I would have been thrilled to find a car with just one of these facts
attached to its resume.

To me all these individual facts combined make the car very
significant.

I'm just luckey that I found it and I'm not reading about one of you
guys finding it. I just happend to be in the right place at the right time!

Thanks, Porschehead

P.S. I appreciate so many peoples interest in the car, It helps
to motavated me to want to get it back on the street.

Default Might have to let it go due to low cash flow

Might have to let the car go due to lack of cash flow. My job
and the economy ( or lack there of ) is putting a hurting
on my wallet.

I have some other things to try and sell first, but if they don't sell and my cash flow doesn't pick up I may have to sell the 951 in the next month or so .

I have had a few people show an interest in the car and heard
mention of $10,000. on this thread, don't know if he's blowing smoke?

As far as a historically significant 951 goes, its got to be one of the
rarest in the world. Most of the cars history has been discussed in this
thread.

Read history Recap in Post above.

Not to interested in trades.

If your seriouse, think on it, what would it be worth to you???

Okay, I've been BURRIED ALIVE at work the past few weeks, but Sean PM'd me about this last post.

What would it be worth to me?? Enough that I wouldn't let anything short of dire family emergency type stuff push me to parting with it, Sean.

You're out, what? Two grand? Sell some spares of something if ya just need some cash, but the restoration can wait, right? Hell, even if it's 10 years before you ever turn a wrench on it, it's worth holding onto.

Yeah, I know that's not what you asked, man, but you KNOW what a find this thing is. And I'm sure you've had this discussion with yourself a bunch of times, but ****, man...

It's Holbert's RACECAR! I understand glaring lack of cashflow (damn near living in poverty, myself). Dude, it's just me, but I'd dump my daily driver and buy a beater before I'd part with HISTORY.

That being said, I'm hoping and praying it doesn't come to that for ya, Sean (it'd be nice to see a working stiff like me get his crack at a Cinderella story). I'd pay an easy $10K for it (if I had the cash) based on the history factor alone. I would have NO CLUE about market value for something like that though. Good luck, man. Hope it doesn't come to that...

Sean, Skoda is right and you have come to your senses realising you paid too much for it. You obviously got the original invoice after the sale and realised you paid $2000 for a car the original owner paid $2520 sixteen years earlier! Sorry

Seriously, I agree with TaylorSea, what you have there is a piece of history worth much more than the price of admission. The thrill you will get from this car and the surrounding story will be with your for life. This car is only worth its true value in assembled servicable condition (not necessarily pristine), at the moment the the small monetary value will seem stupid in years to come and you will feel like the guy you bought this from. You are only really into it for $1300, sell the magnesium wheels or some other spares which will cover your real cost, forget about it for a while and then come back when the financial crisis has passed. You will regret selling this a lot! Keep the pictures up, very interesting.

George, what was the extra reinforcing the cup cars have? Where should Sean look for it? Thanks
