Default Ditching my old MAF setup

Team,

I've decided to ditch my old cold air MAF setup. Mainly, I have been chasing a rich condition at startup. I'm thinking now that its possible my old MAF setup (that came with the car when I bought it a few years ago) is failing somehow. In that sense, I was thinking about returing to the original AFM that came in a box of spares (inlcuding a brand new oem j-boot). lining it all up; and realized I don't have all of the parts. Mainly, I'm looking for the two items circled in blue on the attachment. Also, I am running an upgraded turbo; so I will need some sort of adapter at the turbo.

Then, with all of this; I am now thinking; maybe i should replace the MAF setup with something more updated? Maybe I shouldn't go back to the original AFM because the Turbo is a K27?
I would like to get the car back to an original looking engine bay (classic turbo box) at least.

I appreciate everyones thoughts and opinions.

Currently running an old "Autothority" MAF kit with chips.
1986 951. Tial 38 wastegate. K27 Turbo, New O2 sensor, DME temp sensor, Ftech9 DME, Ftech9 DME relay. Newish fuel injectors.

Mostly lurking on here as I am no expert when it comes to giving advice on the 944 platform. It would be nice to hear updates what other people are doing with airflow these days. Lots of old threads.
Sorry about the crappy phone grab edited pic.

Thanks!

Hi, I've been going through a bit of this myself. In my case, I went with a "steal" Vitesse MAF setup (MAF/Chipboard/MAP sensor) with the stock airbox and K27 Raptor turbo. I had to use an adapter from the airbox to MAF, then a Lindsey Racing J-boot to fit the K27 inlet.

As for the parts you're looking for, #25 is as rare as hens teeth. They came on later cars and are NLA from Porsche. I did find one last year on Ebay Germany, but I haven't run across any since.

#17 is part 951 110 190 00 and is still available from Porsche for ~ $50...but you can likely find one used for each from a dismantler. Luckily I had my original J-boot with vacuum hoses attached and stole it from there.

Moto, Thanks for replying. Can you post a pic of your engine bay?

Thanks!

That looks fairly stealth! What did the Vitesse Stealth V-MAF run you? This may be my path.

Check out the Vitesse MAF page in the link below:

Reached out to Vitesse. The reply I received stated that they don’t have the stealth and won’t have it anytime soon, they only have the original cone style right now. They also said I will need their updated fuel injectors….

so maybe I’m back towards the old AFM….

ugh.

On a stock 87 turbo....

any gains to be had with the MAF conversion.?

I am looking at future upgrades though.

When/if you switch back to the AFM you must use an AFM chip tuned for the K27.

On a stock car, running stock boost, going to a MAF you will notice better response but not necessarily a big peak HP increase. The MAF allows you to run higher boost, which yields a good jump in performance.
With a stock turbo (K26), a good AFM chip is fine. Once you upgrade your turbo, a MAF with proper software and larger injectors are a must.

Does a standard AFM chip know which injectors your are running (stock, 55, 75, 83#) or does it simply ask for as much fuel as it "needs"?

LR sells the boot for a k27 to stock afm. I am using it currently and it is well made with all the tree fittings.

NO! The chip must be configured/programmed to work with the injectors used (based on size and characteristics). Fuel Pressure must be known as well during the chip configuration.

It is possible to configure a chip to support different injectors (with limitations). However, the user must select the correct setting for the injectors on the engine.

The chip is programmed to supply fuel based on air flow (dynamic) and of course based on injectors size and fuel pressure (static).

I would use the stock afm and injectors. Stock components work best and retain best resale value.

Did you get this installed and running?

If yes, what boost are you running? Interested to hear your thoughts on running a K27/6 Raptor with MAF.

This is what you want. Everything else out there is pretty outdated. Looks like LR made some improvements since buying it from Rogue Tuning.
