Your offer is likely considerably more than the scrap value, and anything beyond that is a bonus. If he truly cared about the car, why the hell is it such a mess?

As I said previously, my car is all original (so easier to fix) and sat in an air conditioned/heated storage space for seven years, while the estate of the decreased owner was resolved - and THEN still cost the dealership that sold me the car $7K at a motorsports specialist to bring it back to running/saleable condition (I have that receipt). But not EVERYTHING was taken care of - but it is a full two page receipt of a lot of things (belts, water pump, all the rubber hoses, fuel pump/filter, brakes/brake hoses and the clutch slave/master cylinder).

Since receiving the car I have done shocks, engine mounts, fuel rail and shifter linkage myself - so another $2K-ish.

So, it took almost $10K for a low mileage (mine had 45K miles on it when I purchased it 9 month past) stock car, and bear in mind the interior and exterior are near perfect (so no bodywork or interior expenses).

I hate to see a 951 in such an unloved condition, but it's infuriating if the current owner doesn't get real and understand all he has now is scrap metal, unless he wants to spend (probably) $15K-20K to bring this car back to running condition.

Unless he's really odd, a frank discussion breaking down the costs you might be looking at should be all that's needed to get him to come down to a fair price.

Give it a go. Unless of course you've been put off yourself?
These are good points. I just let him know I am backing out yesterday - maybe I will give it a week or two.

I think your the one taking the massive risk. The car took a violent hit to bend the rim like that. You might find a cracked control arm or other issues. The front bumpers is falling off.

The car reminds me of this guys airplane purchase.

Funny - I have been following this. When I was a kid my dad got a few cars back on the road and I am sort of up for the challenge - at a fair price. My only major concern are electrical gremlins /intermittent problems as mentioned upthread. That would drive me to insanity..

Easy, change all moving parts, new electric harness and throw in 15k and 1000hrs.

I emphasize that this car is not a good starting point for a beginner. Buy a running/driving car that you can enjoy right away. Lots of stories of people buying nonrunners and years later they have never even driven a 951. Life is short. start driving now. take your 10 - 20 k and buy an enthusiast owned car with maintenance up to date.
You will thank me later.

It is an awful idea and you are probably correct for 95% of cases and I'm in the minority. But I was a complete newbie. Most I had done was change my oil, not even my own brakes. I didn't even have a garage when I first pulled my engine, I have pictures on my first thread on Rennlist. I owned an off-brand metric socket set, didn't even own a jack (thank god for Harbor Freight and Craigslist, a neighbor that had 2 drag cars (got lucky there) and various junker 944 sellers). But I love cars. And yes, I was under the impression that all my car, that sat for 10 years, needed was belt service. I was very ignorant to say the least. But these days with Youtube videos and this forum, among others, you can fix just about anything. And that is what got me through it. 20-30 years ago, I probably don't have the access to the information I needed to work on the car. But I was motivated and found that it was a blast working on the car. Sure I had bloody knuckles, sore back, lots of cursing, and lighter wallet but I had a blast and learned a ton. And therapeutic lol some days it was cool to go out to the garage turn on some music and wrench away.

Just giving you another perspective.

This would be a great LONG TERM project for someone that had: 1) unlimited time, 2) unlimited funds, 3) ability to do vast majority of their own work, 4) all the tools and knowhow, 5) enough space to accomplish a full tear down/rebuild.

Nah. See my post above. Had non of the things listed. Except for my 2 car garage now. But I did start on the driveway of my previous house

It really isn’t rocket science

Is the vendor a hoarder or a collector?
A collector maintains the value of his cars and keeps them road-ready.
A hoarder does nothing but let them deteriorate into the dust.
The latter frequently tries to pass himself/herself off as the former - but the condition of the vehicles tells the tale.
I'd say $5-$10K would be sensible.

You know, this could be a good project for someone who already has a good, stock drivetrain and it looking for a donor body. I'd wager less time would be spent swapping in a good engine and wiring than troubleshooting and getting the current engine to run. Afterward, you have a relatively low-mileage, stock car which might actually be worth more than invested (this assuming no body damage on the front end....

Then part out the 2.7 and 968 transaxle to recoup a little $$

I would take it on if it was closer to me and getting it across the border was not during the winter.
I am already working on 4 of them right now.
Why not a 5th
These are bikes are in the budget too cause one can never have nothing to do.

Very coincidental timing for this old post to pop up today, this is the Excellence article I was thinking of with the white Turbo modified by Kelly Moss.

Just stumbled upon this thread. Based on the pictures and the Excellence description I would almost be 100% certain this is the companion car to mine. Seats and strut bar give it away. Ironically I also have an almost identical 951 - colour, wheels, etc. The $80k figure might be more real than you think. Remember these were modded in the late 90’s and shops like JME and KMR were rumoured to charge $50k or more just for an engine. I was told they spent over $250k on my 968 - including two rebuilds, body work, etc. I find it hard to believe too but I know of guys who spent $80k modding their BMW’s and in 10 years guys may think that is insane. Anyway, good to see the car has been located. But really disappointing to see the condition it is in now. Tempting to secure it just so that my 968 has its companion back. But would not likely be a prudent financial decision. Has it been in the ocean at any point in time? How can that much corrosion occur?

Every morning begins with fresh moisture in the air... ah the smell of a fresh new day. If you don't run that 944 sitting outside, the moisture doesn't burn off. And so it goes..

This is probably why my daily driver still has its original reference sensor harness.

Neat Excellence article. Wonder what Mr Moss would suggest seeing his creation today
