Not that it matters now but did all S2 motors have dampers. I had to ask for parts from Lindsey that they love to keep to sell wondering if my damper went to larts ? I purchased a complete engine that was sent to them.

AFAIK yes, whether a S2 one would be enough for a hacked up crank, who knows. Probably worth $1-200 though.

There are various good threads on Rennlist about the dampers. Apparently, the BHJ (RS Barn) is slightly larger than stock and requires some cutting of the belt cover to fit.

I'm actually starting to wonder if my stock S2 damper has bitten the dust (154K miles) since after I got my car back after having new flywheel, new clutch, new torque tube installed it makes a real racket when first started from cold. It sounds like the exhaust system and body are vibrating when you rev the engine in neutral. And when you first pull away from a stop and give it gas I get some shuddering (like my A4 with single mass flywheel)... but after driving for awhile and getting things warmed up the noise dissipates greatly. This is exactly the type of issue I found in one of the threads. Definitely sounds like time for a replacement.

Since the stock S2 damper is apparently available from Porsche again (had been NLA in all the old threads from circa 2016), I'm not sure the BHJ is worth twice the cost, but it is supposed to be a superior part.

Not to hijack this thread... but does anyone know the differences between a 968 crankcase (944-100-963-00) and a 944 S2 crankcase (944-100-962-00)?

I’m so dumb I only know the engine I had built 90 S2 and my new block is 92 968 with sqirters look identical to the untrained eye so many interchangeable parts it’s great 👍
I have noticed three variations of oil pump pick up and vent

Aren't the squirters the main difference between 2.7/S2 and 968 blocks?

Thought I read somewhere that the S2 damper could be rebuilt?

Hmmm, that might be good, but might cost more than a new one.

Regarding the BHJ damper originally sold by RS Barn, I'm kinda getting cold feet on ordering anything from a business that claims they went out of business in May 2021... but are still taking phone orders. Also, I looked at a lot of old threads going back 15 years and some posters said they would never do business with them again as they got bad information, were sold parts that didn't meet the description, never got a return phone call or email, etc.

If your using a 968 or S2 crank you need to run a harmonic dampener. Only the S2 came with a dampener pulley at the front of the engine. The 968 used a dual mass flywheel that doubles as the harmonic dampener. If your looking for more performance the DRS pulley which uses an ATI super damper is the way to go, although they may have been a limited run. A new option is M44 performance, who is in the process of designing and fabricating a simpler more cost effective design similar to the S2 pulley but using an ATI super damper.

Why "save" 500$ on a 10k engine?

Jan Mertens sells hub and ATI damper, superb quality.
