1986 951 Tire and Wheel Selection
#31
My question is somewhat basic: On a mostly original car, can I run the 8" Fuches, 951.362.117, made for the rear on the front axle without any issues? Would the slightly larger front tires make any real improvement in handling? I am presently running 245/45 on the rear. This would allow normal tire rotation. Also, I could use one of the old 7" front wheels as a full sized spare. Really like the look of the original wheels.

Not sure if you could run a 245 width tire, but you 100% can run an 8” fuch up front. I had a friend that ran the 8” 951 fuchs up front with 9” 930 fuchs in the rear. Looked incredible.

245 tire is best matched with a 9" wheel, a 225 best matched with a 8" wheel. Of course you can run a 245 on an 8" wheel but it will look "muffin topped" and you will get more sidewall flex and rollover - not necessarily more grip though.

Thanks for the advice. So, my plan would be to move my 8" wheels to the front and buy 9" for the rear. Original Fuchs 9" wheels for the 930 I assume would be cost prohibitive. Are any of the aftermarket copies worth buying? Can I run anything wider than 245/45 on 9" wheels? Then there is the offset to deal with. One of the old 7" wheels could then replace my unsafe 37 year old collapsible spare. Just a bit cautious about buying wheels when not sure if they will fit.

Howdy,
I'm about to pick up a 1986 951 and have been researching wheel and tire size. I want to go with a 17"x7.5" wheel running a 245/40R17 Michelin Pilot Sport 4s tires. What offset would work? The car currently has early 2000's boxter wheels. and stock the offset is aprox 23.3mm I think. I don't really want to roll the fenders but I will if I have to. Thanks for the help.

Hope I'm not asking a redundant question, but will 911.362.119 fit the rear of a '86 951 (early offset)? I just don't want to screw up and buy the wrong wheels. What tire size would be recommended? Thanks for your help and patience.
