I just added a larger oil cooler, that adds about 1qt capacity. then I changed the oil,(didn't run the car after I added the cooler) drained the oil, then added 7 qts and a 1/2 qt of an additive(we wont talk about that)
ran the car for about 5 min, check the oil 24 hrs later and it is at the top mark on the dip stick.... which is funny because I figured it would read low since the oil cooler should suck up that extra qt capacity.
what gives?
I will say this, the front of the car is still on jack stands, as I am doing other work. but the car is only at about a 3deg angle, doubt that would make it make it read full?
You have to get he oil hot enough to open the oil thermostat or else the oil never gets directed to the oil cooler. Letting the engine idle for 5 min is never going to get you there. You pretty much have to drive the car to get the oil hot. Oil temp lags the water temp by several minutes depending on how you drive.
Agree. I have a oil temp gauge plumbed into my oil coolers after the thermostat so when that gauge reads temp I know the thermo has opened.
Obviously depends on many variables but I'm always surprised at the time it takes for oil to flow to the coolers. Cooler fall days it often never opens.
Hmmmm Well part of the reason I didn't drop the car was because I wanted to make sure these new oil lines I built didn't leak, or worse, blow off. how long would it take to get it to open just idling?
What weight oil is in the car? You may not get the oil thermostat to open by just idling the car.
I use VR1 20W50 which is heavy but at highway speeds it might take 15-20 minutes on a warm day to get things warmed up and oil flowing to the coolers.
Not sure I understand your issue. You added 1 qt capacity. Stock capacity is 6.3 qts. You filled 7 1/2 qts and now you're reading full. What am I missing?
There is a bypass port built-in to the oil filter housing that allows oil flow to the cooler even with the engine cold and oil thermostat closed.
The 'stat opening just makes ALL the oil go to the cooler.
Well I always put 7qt in and it would read in the middle.

so oil is/was flowing into the cooler?
I really wanted to make sure there were no leaks in the new lines/cooler, before I drive it.

Odd.. I fill 6 litres at oil changes... shows nearly full... then gives me about half *after* running (ie. filter holds some--I use stock filter with check valve)

Spencer,
Is there a dedicated bypass port in the housing or does the cold position of the thermostat just bleed a little oil flow into the normal external oil cooler port? I don't remember seeing a separate port in there. I'll have to look closer. Makes sense I suppose. I guess that also means that the cooler loop is pressurized even when the oil is cold?
