Back in the fold
After about 5 years. I had the 951 itch again and picked up this 86 that was sitting in an airport hanger for 30 years. The original owner sold her to me and I could see tears in his eyes. The car has every option available on the 86's including a Alpine CD radio. Yes, you heard that right. A factory installed CD radio in 86. I didn't believe it until I saw the documentation. I'm extremely happy and can't wait to drive it after the t belt is done.
Now the decision of whether I should restore her or restore and modify her is killing me. Knowing how rare these low mileage ones are 38k. I dunno what direction to take.
I'm happy to be back though and looking forward to interacting with all of you.

Although this is a TS it's original and brought a ton of dough. Sold for more than the original sticker. Just sayin, it's only original once.

I was fortunate to have owned a few 944 t's since 1991. I actually prefer the 86 model year over any other. Simply because they don't have abs and airbags. The mod bug is going to kill me though because I know how well these cars take to being tuned.
I was actually looking for something more seasoned but, the time and effort involved isn't worth it imo.

Ugh that would be a hard one ...if you care. Low mileage and un-modded Turbos seem to be kinda rare?? Your gonna have to make the call but that particular one kind calls out to be "left alone." If you have the space ... you could always find something more of a "Basket case" and bring that back to life. Pretty sure there is no shortage of them with blown head gaskets and high mileage?? Most likely Lart , has a few of them, waiting to be parted out. I can't say what to do but it is a nice problem to have.

Congrats bruddah. I just picked this one up on BaT: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...-944-turbo-89/
2 most important characteristics on a 951 to me are boost and handling. (And of course that amazing feeling when you sit in the drivers seat)
Here is how I think I will be treating mine. My vision is an extremely fun daily driver.
1. Make sure she is safe to drive (brakes, tires, no torn cv boots, turn signals work, I’m not going to kill myself or anyone else)
2. Up to par maintenance wise (timing belt, water pump, old/rotted hoses replaced, oil change, spark plugs... routine maintenance / replace worn out components
3. Replace any missing or broken parts or things I’m not satisfied with (I need an engine cowl tray, replace my coolant extension tank and change out fuel lines. )
4. Engine / boost monitoring: I am leaning towards a wide band o2 sensor so I can monitor air fuel ratio just for peace of mind. Car has manual boost controller and boost gauge already.
5. Suspension: She’s already got weltmeister front and rear sway bars, Weltmeister 250lbs front springs with oem struts and oem rear shocks.
6. Boost: as a potential everyday daily driver and with roughly 180,000 miles on a 30 year old car I’m going to keep her mellow in the hp/torque world with probably a performance chip, enhancement to the stock 26/6 turbo and a new wastegate.... maybe a MAF to spool the turbo a bit quicker and better performance. This will probably need the correct FPR and maybe a few other things I’m not 100% sure yet.
I would like to head to the track eventually to see how much I enjoy that experience before diving deeper with the vehicle.
but for now on my list is: find boost leak, diagnose why I’m failing smog and fix the broken odometer.
enjoy the journey:-). I can tell you the Weltmiester sways bars have made a huge difference in handling. My old 951 had a stock suspension and this one feels so much nicer in the corners :-).
Congrats again!

A single exterior photo is not going to provide the community with enough information to help you accurately access the condition of this low mileage car. From the mileage alone it would led me to say you should do a stock restoration. However depending on what the interior looks like, if there are any massive surprises under the hood and on the under side and your capabilities and willingness to perform the work might slightly change my opinion.
Another thing to consider is if you would ever consider selling it in the future. Only if you have absolute confidence that you will not then at that point I'd say you can do whatever you want with it regardless of what implications it will have on resale value. If otherwise and you choose to mod it your going to at least want the mods to be 100% reversible back to factory condition.
That's my 2cents on that.
