Default Props to Vitesse...

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Johns and have been running his products for a good long while. But after taking a nice drive today in the Sherman and acting like a total teenager again, I just gotta say “thanks!” My 951 is a hoot and a half to drive, dead reliable and very fast. Stage II turbo, Maf and cam. I should probably upgrade to his latest offerings but it already works damn good and has done so for ten years now.

John, you are tops!

Hey Scott, glad to see you are enjoying "Sherman". I guess many may be wondering why you picked the name "Sherman" for the 951. Fill them in.

What you have works great, the newer V-MAF+ software is even better. Your car should be quick and lots of fun, hope you continue to enjoy it for a long time.

I've seen a lot of systems come and go since John first reinvented the MAF, and to me John's stuff has consistently set the standard by which others are judged. No fuss, no marketing hype, no weird issues, just gobs of power with factory manners and unsurpassed support! The fault protections in his system are also worth understanding -- not sure there is anything else like them available...Needless to say, I'm a fan.

Okay, I finally have a chance to respond with the story of how the Gen'l Sherman got its name...

A very long time ago, I had a well running but cosmetically challenged '86 951 that I bought from Don Istook. It was a fun car but I wanted something a bit nicer and a buddy of mine had been pestering me to buy it, so when I got a chance to buy an '87 951 from Matt (Rennlister from Sacramento altho I think he long since went to Audi's instead of Porsches and doesn't come around here anymore), I sent my '86 away and paid for the '87 and arranged for a transport company to bring me the car. After an extended period of time waiting for them to show up and pick the car up, I *finally* got a call from Matt, saying that the good news was that it had finally been picked up, but the bad news was that the loading of the car resembled the opening of the "Dukes of Hazzard" with a running start toward the ramp and parts flying off the cars, etc... Its another long story to tell what I went through with that part of the ordeal, but I'll spare y'all for now, the point of the story was that the car wound up with the name "Gen'l Lee". Unfortunately, the wounds were fatal to that car and I ultimately went shopping for a replacement.

John from Vitesse had been developing some of his products with TT (another old time rennlister) and had been using an '87 951 in Maryland owned by yet another rennlister, Ben as a test platform. Unfortunately for John, who was interested in buying said car, he went out of the country right around the time that Ben decided he wanted to sell the car and I wound up first in line and purchased it. Now, I didn't feel *too* bad for John as he had recently skunked me on a LSD gearbox I had been trying to buy, so in honor of John and the fact that he was based in Atlanta, I named my new 951 after General William Tecumseh Sherman, the Union General who burned down Atlanta during the Civil War. It also seemed appropriate that it happened to be "Union Blue" and came from a Union State. lol I did, however, also buy a lot of Johns parts afterwards, so I believe he has since forgiven me..

Hahaha... It's a good story. We all have a reason for the names we choose for our cars. And yours is one of the few male's names... so I was curious. Got any photos of these cars?

Here’s a current picture of it. I’ll try to find the one with my “Stars n Bars” sunroof in it, a holdover from the Gen’l Lee that I painted up with the help of my daughter. (Yeah, I’m not quite “father of the year” material but we had fun!)

The Car sure looks good. I'm glad you got it and you are enjoying it. I still have the LSD transaxle out of it, still in storage for the last 14-15 years.
