Default /Automatic or Tiptronic conversion for an 87 951 - can it be done?

Looking for someone who has already gone down this road or determined that it just isn't feasible. Due to knee problems, I am going to have to abandon manual transmissions. However, I LOVE MY 951 and would spend ungodly amounts of money to convert it to a tiptronic from a 968 (or an automatic from a 928). Any thoughts, wisdom or advice in this area? A referral to a shop that would do the work for me would be appreciated as well.

Thanks,
Rich Mason

i'm sure it would be easy to do, you would need everything from the bell-housing back to the dif. and the corresponding electronics (i don't have PET in front of me to see what differs and what doesn't). personally, i'd see if i could find someone who had one of the few auto 951s kicking around and wanted to do a swap... but if you want the tip vs a plain auto, that's totally understandable. not sure where to source the parts - but try calling Ian from 944online.com - he rebuilt my trans (manual) and installed my LSD and might have a line on this kind of thing, and does awesome work... he's down in FL which isn't CLOSE to SC but a lot closer than, say, NY

This might be a little tough.

968 tips have a lot of electronics to control the transmission. To do the job correctly you would need :

Tip Transmission
Tip control module + harness
Tip selector mechanism
different flywheel + bellhousing
Instrument cluster (to show gear selected), but then you would lose the boost gauge
Tip drive shafts (different length)

I haven't heard of anyone doing it - but I don't think that it would be impossible.

You might be happier just buying a 968 with tip?

He just wrote that he wont get rid of his 951 and is willing to spend "ungodly" amount of money on it so he wouldtn be happier w/ a 968 Tiptrononic!

How about a 968 tip with M030 suspension and then turbocharge the 968. That would a great car although not a 951.

I don't think Porsche ever made an auto 951. Only the 944NA's and 924S's were available with an auto. The 951, S, and S2 only came with a 5 speed. The 968 tip was the only other auto tranny 944 variant.

Default Motodyne in Philly says they can do it...

I exhanged a few emails with them over the weekend (motodyne.com) and they claim that they have done this with a variety of manual Porsches. He specifically suggested the tranny from a 92-93 968 ("bolts right in" the phrase he used). I agree though that the devil will be in the details. How about an earlier unit from an automatic 944...any thoughts on that?

I doubt it would hold up, even at stock power. If it were me, I would definitely go with the 968 trans.

I would advise against buying anything from Black Forest Racing they lie about the condition of the parts they sell, the owner John Forbes sold me a piece of junk engine stating that it was in great condition.
