Default 951 Power-To-Weight Comparisons

I keep a spreadsheet that calculates the horsepower-to-weight ratios of cars. Here are some interesting comparisons:

86 Porsche 951: 2,899 lbs./217HP = 13.36 lbs per HP
02 Subaru WRX: 3,085 lbs./227HP = 13.59 lbs per HP
98 Porsche Boxster: 2,822 lbs./201HP = 14.04 lbs per HP

86 Porsche 951, minor mods: 2,899 lbs./300HP = 9.66 lbs per HP
02 BMW M3: 3,415 lbs./333HP = 10.26 lbs per HP
93 Ferrari 348 Spyder: 3,250 lbs./296HP = 10.98 lbs per HP

98 Porsche 993 Twin Turbo: 3,307 lbs./400HP = 8.27 lbs per HP
86 Porsche 951, moderate mods: 2,899 lbs./350HP = 8.28 lbs per HP
01 BMW Z8: 3,494 lbs./394HP = 8.87 lbs per HP

86 Porsche 951, con$iderable mods: 2,899 lbs./400HP = 7.25 lbs per HP
03 Corvette Z06: 3,133 lbs./405HP = 7.74 lbs per HP
01 Porsche 996 Twin Turbo: 3,395 lbs./415HP = 8.18 lbs per HP

04 Porsche Carrera GT: 3,043 lbs./605HP = 5.03 lbs per HP
86 Porsche 951, exten$ive mods: 2,899 lbs./500HP = 5.80 lbs per HP
04 Viper SRT-10: 3,410 lbs./500HP = 6.82 lbs per HP

Why do we love 951's?

You're a little off on the weight of the 951. They weigh around 2950 if I'm not mistaken.

you can lose a few hundred pounds for a few more $$$ and be really fast. is the 951 only 217 total hp??? i thought that was to the wheels? probably wrong.

Yes, the 951 in 86 only produced 217hp. Keep this in mind though. 86 Corvette 240 hp, 86 Mustang was like 225, Testarossa was 380hp, and most 4 bangers were near 100hp and less. The 4-cylinder Mustang had like 88hp, even through into the 90s. The 911 of that period is only right around 220 and the 911 Turbo was about 280.

Actually, if you look at the RWHP and add 15%, it doesn't really take a huge amount of money to be pretty close to 400hp. Well, $3000 for a Vitesse stage II and the time to install it yourself....you could do it for less if you setup your own things....and you can net about 325RWHP. Add 15% for drivetrain loss and you get about 50 more at the flywheel or 375hp.

Now, once you put your car on the road, how many CDs, tools, how much gas is in the tank, how many passengers you have and how much you weigh adds into the equation I've heard that 100 pounds is roughly the equivalent of 10hp and if that's the case, I have that help as I weigh less than 150lbs.

Interesting comparisons though.....however newer cars with well setup 6-speed trannies seem to be able to have the right gearing to accelerate better over a given range of speed for the same horsepower. And....as someone recently pointed out, your power "under" the curve has a huge difference as well on the race to be run.

Geez, I'd better get to the gym and gain about 3 HP!

Supra?
300zx tt?
3000gt tt?

all pretty heavy but with a few mods can put monster power.

How much weight saving do you guys think comes from removing the following? :

seats (for racing seats)
cats
A/C
spare tire, etc
back seats + carpeting

About $2000 and you can get up to 300RWHP by putting your own easily thought out kit (turbo/chips/injectors/test pipe, etc...). Extremely easy to do.

Go to 400RWHP, at a livable, sustainable boost level, and that will cost you $15k or more.

Still... not bad considering the class of cars you can run with...

While I don't recall how heavy it was Ford did produce the 84-86 Mustang SVO which made (IIRC) 205-210hp in 86. It wasn't a great car but it was fun if you enjoyed playing with turbocharged cars. My old SVO was about as fast as a showroom stock (read: no adjustments made from factory) 5.0 GT/LX. However, it was still just a Mustang with so-so build quality. I'm much happier with my 89 944 Turbo that I've had for about 2 days.

you save alot from stripping the interior.so far i took out the whole carpet set, dynomat, rear seats spare tire.i can honestly say that i saved 60#s,give or take.now i took out my headlights, header panel, front bumper and batwing and replaced them with fiberglass pieces.100lbs = 10hp eh?ok,so i should of/will gain 11hp after all of this is done.

i pretty suprised on how heavy other cars are.with minor mods we can keep up with pretty much with all the newer cars.GO 951!!!!

TonyG if your still following this thread could you lay out your choices for a $2,000 kit? You always mention all the different parts you have tried. You could save the rest of us a lot of time and money by being as specific as possible. It appears you are a California resident, so how have you handled the emmissions testing with the mods.?

Thank You!

I find that people say, "well just get a 951 for $7000 and stick on $2000 worth of mods and you get 300 rwhp"

but how many people on this board actually HAVE a 951 with 300 rwhp?

uhhh.....with $9000 in it? no, the truth is people put on this, that, the other thing and have WAY more than that in it.

951 are a great car, but not as cheap as some people make them out to be.

I would like to actually know

1. how many people have 300hp and how much do they have invested in their car.

2. how many have 350+ and how much do they have invested.

I bet not too many people have high hp and low to moderate investment.

I probably will have $15000 in my car and will have 230-40 hp from a test pipe and chip, good suspension, good sound, new dash, paint job with 968 mirrors, mo3o sway bars, etc. i guess if i put all my money into hp, i could have way more hp and less other goodies.
