Default Axle question. N/A vs Turbo

Just wondering if the N/A axles are the same as the turbo axles? I know that the axles changed a bit during the 85.5 update but I know no other details. Thanks

The 85.5 to 88 NA axles are the same as the 86 turbo axles. 82-85 NAs use a different axle than an 86 turbo, the 87 and up turbos are different than an 86 turbo also. I want to say that the other turbo axles will fit, but I'm not positive. The early axles may also bolt up, but like I said above they're all different.

82-85 axles are significantly shoter than 85.5 and later axles. This was due the change from steel suspension to aluminum suspension. They will NOT bolt up.

Yeah, I think you're right.

I'm pretty sure all turbo axles will bolt up to an 86, but they have different part #s. My turbo S transaxle uses 86 axles just fine, so at least the bolt pattern/spacing is correct.

I believe the axles themselves aren't interchangable between the early cars and the turbos, but the cv joints may be (and I think they are).

I'm pretty sure that they are, but not positive. 86 axles seem strong enough though, so not sure if it'd be necessary.

Ahmet's right in that the '87+ axles have stronger CV-joints. The splines are different so they won't fit on the '85.5-86 944/951 axles. However, the transition was in the middle of '87 sometime. So there are some early '87 951s using the early axles. Even though the CV-joint won't interchange, the entire axle assembly will swap between '85.5-86 944/951 and '87+ models.

The PO replaced the 88 turbo S axles with early axles and I broke 2 CV joints last summer. Both times were "high stress" but still shouldn't have failed. I've since stopped accelerating hard across bumpy pavement, it seems wheelhop is a CV joint killer.

My car is an 86 with 86 axles and CV joints. I've had no failures of the axles or CV joints with 375 rwhp. But then, I don't do drag races with Mustangs.

Don't mean to bring this thread back from the dead, but Danno am I to understand if I find an entire half-axle with CV boots from, say, an '89 951, that will fit on my '86 951?

I purchased a new axle assembly from Paragon last year. As I remember, there was an 86 944T and an 87-91 944T selection. Since the units were "new" complete units, I would think they are not interchangeable. Just give Paragon a call and I am sure they will help.
