Default Do I RELLY need a MBC?

I am planning on a new WG. Most people suggest a MBC and boost guage to go along with it. Do I really need the MBC?

I just want a tight WG to be set and done with. I do not want to change the boost particularly. I am wondering as the car stock has no MBC, and I don't plan to use more than the 15psi my chip is programmed for, does someone with my requirements really need the MBC??

Yes, you do - so that when you go up north to Nebraska to visit uncle Poindexter and the temperature drops 60 degrees, you aren't suddenly running 21 psi.

The electronic boost controllers are the way to go. A mechanical unit is going to start bleeding boost prior to the set boost level. Electronic units are more of an all or none proposition, they do not bleed boost until the set pressure is reached.

For now all i can afford is a MBC.

I KNOW I COULD DO A SEARCH, BUT CAN ANYONE SAVE ME THE TIME AND TELL ME WHERE I CAN GET
1.MBC
2.DECENT INEXPENSIVE BOOST GUAGE
3. BLACK FACE PLATE FOR THE ABOVE TO GO BELOW RADIO (UNLESS YOU HAVE A BETTER PLACE TO MOUNT)

Hopefully inexpensive and all from one supplier!

Thanks, Blueman33

If you go for the faceplace, Lindsey's was less expensive than many of the others I looked at. Don't know if they sell a boost guage or not, but they do sell an MBC. I'd say they could get you one if you talked to them. They may have one, I don't see one listed on their site for a quick glance.

If you go with the a-pillar pod gauge, I think the only color is black (if they did burgundy, I'd very much consider one, otherwise you'd have to have it dyed to your interior color or leave it black. But I don't know if they sell the other parts you need, although they possibly sell the boost gauge there since they are a gauge place, but MBC would need to be from elsewhere.

Wouldn't take much to have someone machine you that plate if you had one for reference though. Might be even cheaper.

Lindsey has everything you need. They can get you any Autometer gauge as well.

I am still a little confused as to why Porsche wouldn't put a boost controller on this car. Do they put it on 911 line turbos?

The VW turbos and Chrysler turbos also don't appear to have manual boost controller

I figured if the chip is set at 15, it would be fine, but it seems a Rennlist conscensious that a boost controller should be installed.

The controller is only $60 and i suspect a guage isn't all that much, so I guess i'll go for it!

You do not need a manual boost controller. I actually find those quite useless unless you want to manually adjust boost pressure (and take the chances that come with that).

They have boost controllers, very good ones, the boost is controlled by the DME/KLR electronically. It is programmed into the chips. It also acts as a fail safe device when the engine is not running properly. It will default to 1.2bar absolute pressure to save the engine when it detects problems (knocking, overboost, etc). A friend of mine burned a hole in his piston by using a MBC. His fuel injector on that cylinder failed and went seriously lean. The Knock sensor picked it up, but since it couldn't control the boost he ended up running really lean with full boost and over a timeframe of 100 miles burned the piston (and a nice hole in the cylinder wall too).

I'll leave the stock system as is, make sure it works properly, and then get a chip that raises the boost level and has the timing/fuel to match.

I think the Reliaboost from Boost Sciences is a much better MBC than either the air regulator **** type or the LBE, and it's only $36. The vendor claims it does not bleed boost prior to the preset level. It works so well on my car with a larger turbo, no cycling valve, and a rebuilt stock wastegate that I can't see spending $1K on an aftermarket wastegate and EBC. Only problem is, unless I adjust the Reliaboost for this condition, I get about 3psi more boost than usual on a cold morning, and I expect the same would happen if I went down to sea level.

Blueman33-

www.egauges.com has an awesome VDO cockpit black gauge for (0-30psi boost) $37.00, and it will match your stock instrument cluster.

I would go with the Reliaboost MBC, but get yourself an air-fuel meter to give you a heads up on being dangerously lean.

The $100.00 on gauges is worth the money to know the health of your car.

My 2 cents....

If you want to stay with the factory cycling valve, Lindsey has a single port WG that you can use with it. A dual port WG won't work with the factory CV.

"A dual port WG won't work with the factory CV."

Interesting that no one mentioned this when inmquiring to PURCHASE a WG.

Thanks for the info.

Is the CV the same as this $34 part from Paragon??
So I could buy a tial 38mm and this? or shell out $400 PLUS a core charge for Lindsey, or just throw my hands up and keep the original one on.

http://www.paragon-products.com/

Anyone know where to just get a rebuilt original WG with a stiffer spring?

Thanks.

No plug intended, but the Tial is a much better product and better reliability as well. Just look at the construction and the design. In the long run,you won't regret buying a Tial. They are made to last and function right every time.

As for the Reliaboost or now,the Acuboost, get the stiffer spring and you will be happy.

As NZ951 mentioned, you will save over a hundred 100$,cause you won't have to pay for shipping back your core, and our Tial kit is 100$ less then Lindsey.
