Default 02 sensor....... help me find out which one I have please

Hey guys, 14 years ago my brother put in a round gauge to monitor A/F ratios on the pillar, problem is when the engine is running it is erratic with fast moving needle between very rich to very lean. From what I can gather the "eyeball" average seems to be about 14.7. I'm guessing its probably because its a narrow band system and NOT a wide band system. Do I have this correct? So, if I want to change over to a wide band, is it as simple as taking out that 02 sensor on the downpipe and exchanging for a wide band sensor? Is it the gauge that needs replacement, is it both? Will the wide band sensor have the same wiring to the ecu and be a direct replacement?

thanx for the info

Jaime

Sounds like an analog gauge that's doing its best to keep up with the O2 sensor. You may also have a small exhaust leak?

It won't show a static measurement because of batch fire injectors IIRC, so it's going to fluctuate at idle. Does it get more stable at load or higher RPMs?

I have to correct something, the o2 sensor is actually in the stock location on the up-going pipe of the crossover pipe, so its likely a narrow band sensor as i've been told a wide band will not handle the high boost pressures. Also, since i have no sensor downwind from the turbo It must be a narrow band. The analog gauge itself does not say " wide band " like I've seen on google images. Do they even make an analog wide band? Looks like all of wide bands are digital.

I installed a wide band Bosch O2 sensor, actually had somebody else install it, but you can see it in the first picture above the wrench in the guy's hand:

Here is the wideband sensor that I installed. Don't have a part number.

Just google Bosch wideband and you'll find them all over, you have to make sure the connector on your gauge which also has a power supply lead, ground etc. hooks into it.

I have a digital gauge in my panel below the radio.

Paul, did they take off the catalytic or install in-car?

Take out the O2 sensor and get the number off of it. Run a google search on the number. That will tell you what the sensor is for.

Did it work correctly for 14 years?
Is the original narrowband still in place?
Original DME?

It is upstream of the CAT and no, it was not removed, just drilled the hole and welded in the bung.

As others have mentioned, do you due diligence on the system that is installed first.

That looks like an Innovate LC-1 you have. I have the same wide band. I like mine.

Yes, it's a Innovate LC-1, came with the car, but was never installed.

Thanks for the pointers guys. Yes, same dme, o2 sensor is about 4 years old, car runs ok, but likely not optimal as it still has one of the original, first generation Lindsey Racing MAF (chrome cold side turbo body parts). Been researching VEMS vs Rogue vs Vitesse. I was hoping to see more activity and VEMS ownership. I really like what i read about the plug-n-play vems but not too many on the bandwagon for this. Anyone have any useful info on VEMS? You can pm me if you like.

thanx!
