Default Tial 38

Wanna get a Tial 38 wastegate. I understand I need adapter plates. Found a vendor on eBay selling them that bolt on. I thought they had to be welded on. Are the bolt on ones good too? Is there anyone that sells the kit with the adapters and wastegate together?

if you get a new style V-band 38, you will need to weld (I am not recommending this). The old F38 tials use bolt on adapters. I've never seen any welding.

Long ago Myswiss used to make the bolt style adapter plates for the Tial 38. Not sure who/what companies are making them these days.

I don't have access to my pics and notes at the moment. I ordered the Tial with the v-bands and then welded the flanges provided in the box to the exhaust pieces. IIRC I ordered a couple of bell transition pieces to complete the fitup.

I saw his plates on eBay. So yeah, he has them. Would the SFR kit with the adapters and wastegate bolt up to my car? It’s like $450 for the plates and wastegate. Is that a good deal?

I have a set of adapters I can sell you. They are new.

One nice thing about the v-band is that there are no gaskets needed. Of course, the fit-up has to be spot-on or you'll get leaks, but that aside, it's nice not having to deal with rusted/corroded bolts on removal and changing gaskets when you pull stuff apart.

That's just my 2 cents on v-band anyway.

The bolded statement is not always true and this is the issue I ran into on my car. One thing to consider (the issue I ran into that only pertains to some of the '86 models), if your car has a one piece cross over the tial/adapter plate will not simply bolt up without cutting/welding. I was on my way to tackling this project on my own car but realized because of my one piece cross over it would not be a simple bolt on even with the F38 wastegate and adapter plates. Below is a thread that is an example of what I am talking about. For all '86 owners this is more of a project than it may look. I may look into making my own custom plates to address this issue.

Interesting. I have an '86 and it came with the two piece crossover pipe (detachable inlet pipe, see below). Is it possible that late '86s had the two piece pipe? I suppose it's possible that it was replaced with a later unit before I got it as well. FWIW, installing the Tial with the bolt on adapters was not a big deal. However, I did not safety wire the mounting bolts and they came loose. So follow that advice!

Yes, my understanding is that some of the late model '86s received the 2 piece cross over. You are lucky!

There was an update available for 1986 turbos to replace the one and four header which was solid with the updated one with the flex pipe. At the same time the crossover pipe was updated to the two-piece design my car came with the original and I have since replaced both parts.

You guys must have played a lot of tetris as kids. I have an 86, with the flex bit on the header and the 2 piece crossover, and even with adaptor plates, I was unable to get the Tial to fit without some cutting and welding.
Trying to install it in a similar orientation as the the original resulted in contact with the torque tube, so i ended up flipping the orientation so the head of the tila was point towards the rear right side of the car.
