Default luggage cover in hatch

The plastic end pieces that go on the metal tube attatched to the rear seat that hold the spring loaded luggage cover on my 86 951 have disintegrated. can these pieces be replaced or is it neccessary to buy the whole rig. the same thing happened on my previous 951, so I imagine this is a fairly common problem. Any info or ideas will be appreciated.

Sorry, I don't have any ideas about sourcing the caps, but it you don't find any, I have a cargo cover that you can have for half of any price you can find for one (Parts Heaven, etc.) if that helps.

Yes, they can be replaced and are available from the dealership. Sorry I don't have part numbers handy, but if you do a search here, you should find them.

I have three luggage covers with broken end caps that need replacing. This is very useful info.

What do the "17.5 mm" and "16 mm" represent?

I cast one in aluminum and that ended all problems with the end cap.

Dave,

Can you post a pic here to show the aluminum end cap? How about reproducing them for sale to Rennlisters?

Yup, sand cast. I'll look into spin casting them as well. Mine looks just like a plastic one and you can't tell when just looking from the outside that it's not plastic.

Cool. Cheaper than CNC machining if you know how to do it.

Crap, I spent about a week last semester looking for some object to cast for a class. Ended up doing something completely useless. Dave, if you don't want to do these for some people, let me know since we have a lab that is almost always open for use. We have a casting club and the materials cost for us is basically nill. I know they are looking for some kind of fundraiser for new equipment. Do you guys think many people would be interested? My guess is that we'd probably just cast them and do some VERY rough finishing work before shipping them.

Again, Dave, if you are planning on making some for sale, I will graciously bow out since this was your idea (and a very good one!) Still might cast one for myself, though. Anybody think that the seat tilt "*****" might be something else worth casting (3 out of four of mine have broken).

Thanks

Maybe we can entice Dave951M

How much would Rennlisters pay for each end cap?

I am willing to pay as much as $50 for a set of end caps

They're only a few $ from the dealership.

I'd pay $10 per end cap, no more - as Ahmet said, they're dirt cheap at the dealer.
