I didn't, and the car still works

Now that I think of it, it could be a good idea. It's not that much trouble unplugging the battery anyway...

Don't have to, but I always do when I'm working in the engine bay.

Don't have to, but it's a good idea. Nearly every manual starts with- "remove negative lead from the battery". If you do have a wiring problem, there is a very remote chance that it could cause a problem.

Always a smart move. I just have one of those screw up/down battery disconnects...seems the smartest way to go...

The more important thing is to make sure you are well grounded (free of static discharge) if handling the DME and its circuit boards.
