Question Suspension Advice

Hello, I am new here, :bigeye:, and need some help.

I am considering replacing the struts/shocks on my 87 944 na and was wondering if anyone has any good recommendations for good replacements. I seem to find a lot of different options out there and right now I am not wanting to go full racing custom or anything, I just would like to replace the old struts/inserts. I also do not have to funds to purchase some of these insanely priced suspension kits! 3K for suspension?! Not at this point!

Please help!

Depends.

You have not stated how [street, track, race] you plan on driving the car, or the condition of the roads you will be driving on, getting there.

If you search the forum, depending on intended purpose, there is plenty of advice, ranging from replacing your dampers with stock Boge/Sachs, upgrading to sport Koni/Bilstein, or fine tuning with multi-way adjustables running remote cannisters.

Boge/Sachs, best bang for the buck, good performance and good ride quality, for like $300/set of 4.

Wow, that's a TON cheaper than I'd expected... Is the longevity ok on that setup? I know one of the worst feelings in the world is to go through the effort to redo a suspension and then find that it's shot again in 3 years.

Yeah that is also a concern of mine. I do want longevity as well but I am willing to get something that works good for now.

I had a set of Boge/Sachs from 2006 until November of last year...at least 50k miles on the set.
Highway, city, curb-jumping, off-roading, everything.

They were worn out, but still good...

Replaced with another set of the same. I'll check on them in 2025...

Thanks for the input. I think I will check on the Boge/Sachs set since that seems most applicable to what I want.

By the way, I am only wanting street performance right now. I want performance without killing my back so I think I will avoid any track setups. I do take mountain passes and back roads for fun but even with the old shocks being worn out it still drives good.

Is there a major difference in the Sachs/Boge setup and, say the Blistein HDs? There's a moderate but not offensive price difference there, but I dunno how much difference there is in performance. Anyone know?

On my former '83...night and day. The first set is focused on comfort...the second is focused on performance.

On smooth(er) roads...barely discernable. But With the Bilsteins, expansion joints, railroad crossings, and cobblestone roads are certainly less transparent. Best thing I ever did to/for that '83.

I'm guessing the $300 figure for Sachs/Boge is for cars with a rebuildable front strut. The OP's 87 will have a sealed strut so cost will go up as the Sachs/Boge front replacement is a complete strut unit. You could use the Koni's cut-a-strut insert on the front and probably save some money too since they're on sale right now :-)

Wow, thanks- sounds like I'll be sure to go up a notch when I get around to a suspension refresh!

Best thing for you would be to reach out to some of the local CO members and demo the sport setups from Koni/Bilstein they are running.

Whichever way you decide to go, give Jason a call...he currently has the OE setup for ~$400 [for 4 dampers], and both the Koni/Bilstein setups for ~$600.
