Post 944-spec racing on the West Coast is growing

Anybody in the South West corner of the U.S.( and Northern Mexico!) can come race their NA 944. The Southern California group of 944 racers is building on the existing group of Arizona racers. www.944-spec.com is the site. We're adding a Southern California page to the web site soon. This is dirt cheap Porsche racing with the best set of 944 spec rules out there. This series promises to be inexpensive, and at the same time, an absolute blast! For more info email me directly, timcomeau@***.net.

Tim,
Great! I look forward to learning some new tracks in SoCal.
Are you coming over for the NASA/PCA race on Feb 22nd/23rd?

Hey guys, believe it or not, I now own 2 water pumpers. I bought that 83 944 for $500 and started stripping it. All that time, I was trying to help push this other guy's more expensive 924S to somebody else interested in the series. Well, the deal became too good to push to somebody else anymore, so I agreed to buy it myself. The car already has 30mm torsion bars, 250lb springs, Koni yellows, a cage, 2 racing seats and harnesses, 3 sets of phone dials, fresh clutch, top end, windshield, etc. It's as if the former owner read our rules and set the car up! I wanted to come to Phoenix on Feb 22-23, at Dan Webb's behest, just to say hi and observe how you guys operate. Now, I just might push to come race with you guys! BTW, I went before our PCA board of Directors and got the 944-spec cars designated as an official class for San Diego Region autocross and time trialing. How cool is that? It'll really help to grow next year's crop of licensed wheel to wheel drivers. Hopefully, Zone 8 will adopt the rules as well next year. It's growing.....Hope to see you guys this weekend

Cool,
Sounds like the car is ready to race!

It would be great if you can make it and race out here with us.

Tim,

Congrats on your hard work on the series!!! It sounds like your getting it done!

By the way, what do I do with that mean machine sitting in our shop now??? The 924S sounds awsome! I might be buying a great clean 944 for the series as well..just need to talk to the owner and hash out the details.

By the way, we need you at the shop, we are running into crunch time on the two race cars. We have two weekends left, I'm getting the new motor in Neals car, and getting the new head on the Gold Car.I could use your help with graphics and other details on the cars. Remember, we are at Buttonwillow with the cars the weekend of the 8th.

Take Care!

At your service, John! I stopped off at Autobahn Dismantlers in El Cajon on the way home and Sean showed me the chassis he was going to use for his 944-spec car. But, now it looks like he found an even better candidate car, too! That's great because it gets him to the track quicker. Help me sell that white 83 chassis, John! Or, better yet, build it up yourself and come racing! The more, the merrier. Tim

Word of advice for those with multiple 944's for racing.
I actually have 2 cars. Ok one is wrecked 87 924S, but I have basicly have a parts car. I have found this to be very useful. So if you have cheap shell it might not be bad to keep it for parts.

Actually Tim,

Mike and I were talking about buying your 944, I'd just build the motor (stock...I swear..really...) and run it. We should bring it up at the next drivers meeting.

I'm with M758, keep the cars...even a stripped shell might have swaybar bracket you need.

Take Care!

Just got done racing in Phoenix with the 944-spec guys at Phoenix Int'l Raceway. Great guys, great track. Well worth the 4 1/2 hour drive out there from San Diego. We had 8 cars in our NASA group. 3 others were running with the PCA group to get their PCA license or we would have had 11. Had some good racing, Learned alot about the spec cars. My 87 924S performed well, though I had 1 small glitch. The wiper switch broke during the Sunday race and I couldn't turn off the wipers! I must have hit the wand while turning the steering wheel! Holy crap! That was annoying.....Anyway, It was a great weekend and we're going to try to get as many 944-spec cars at California Speedway on March 7-9th as possible. That's the next NASA event. All the guys from Phoenix have been invited. It's a longer haul for them and they have a race the very next weekend so we'll see how many cars can come out to the left coast. The track alone makes the trip worthwhile! Phoenix now has 18 944-spec.com cars racing!!!! Plus others are being built. We're gonna do the same in Southern California. See the rules at www.944-spec.com.

Tim,
We had some good close/clean racing this past weekend in 944-Spec as usual! I can't make the NASA event at Fontana but am planning on as many events as I can in SoCal this summer.

Paul (and all the other guys), Here's another one for you. Mexicali Grand Prix on April 5th and 6th. If we get 6 cars down there, they'll give us our own run group. I'm researching it further. $180.00 for 2 days of racing in the streets. Hotel La Colonia is $58.00/night. Locked/guarded paddock at night. I love racing in Mexico. The fans go crazy and really make the event exciting.

Well -

After I get my comic book stuff rolling on it's own steam, you guys just may have a girl racing - moi!

Depends on alot of stuff, first I'd have to take driving lessons, get a car or borrow a car I could race (ohh, trust a girl driver!?). However that goes, lol.

I just need a daily driver first, then the toys!

Ok,
I was on the fence about a low cost water pumper pcar racer, but after seeing all the fun you guys had at phoenix, I'm both feet in... I've been looking around at the options from buying a seasoned car and race or get a klunker a build it up. Since all my Porsche experiences are with the flat six air cooled variety (...ok stop with the hissing already...) what do you guys recommend? Focus on cars with good engines or just clean chassis? In looking at it I don't see where you can actually get a fully set up car for the $5k some suggest, seems more like $10k has you set up and more like $15k has you in the hunt. Will a well maintained mid life 60K motor handle the abuse or are you on borrowed time? what about 100K? I've talked to a few folks that said new rod bearings (and I assume stretch bolts as well) and milling the head for a bump in compression are needed as a min. This looks like a great way to run a porsche without the relativly high $$$ potential of a 911, but it's hard to get a feel for the real cost. Thoughts?
