Mine is not constant. It only picks up in a specific RPM range and not right away...it takes a few minutes of driving to make the noise. Again, it sounds like the emergency brake is on and just barly contacting the rotor kind of moaning.

I sounds like your power steering pump. I have a S2 cab and it did the same thing. You can either rebuild it with new seals from www.944online.com or just replace the whole thing.

THE ANSWER IS.....
WELL, THE MYSTERY IS SOLVED.
Driving to dinner, I had a buddy tell me that my muffler was bouncing way more than it should be, so I checked it out. When I put the car in the air, I found that I had two problems. First, there were 2 exhaust hangers that were missing and an ehaust mount that was broken. Also had a power steering hose starting to go. The pump was fine.
Amazing what a different perspective will do in diagnosing a problem.
Fixed them both and the noise is gone.
Thanks for all the input and trouble shooting assistance.

my guess would be an alternator, water pump, p.s. pump or a/c compressor bearing is faulty. it may also be a timing belt idler pulley bearing failure as well

I had the belts done and the pump replaced at the time and the hum remains. The alternator when it goes makes a higher pitch noise. I am leaning toward the power steering or the oil pressure regulator.

I've had my S2 for a few years, and it does the same thing as SS S2's, but not all of the time; it seems random. It also hasn't made the sound for at least the past two months (although I haven't been driving it as much as usual this winter). When I bought the car, I had the timing belts, water pump, and cam/balance shaft belts and rollers replaced, as well as a re-seal for my power-steering pump (I'll check my receipts and get back to you). It made the noise before and after, and my mechanic told me it was nothing to worry about. I have never had any problems.
Another S2 I have had extensive seat time with has never made the sound when I've been behind the wheel.

re: OPRV
From what I have read the S2 has makes a distinctive moaning Humming sound at low RPM its coming from the passenger side of the engine it is associated with the Oil Pressure Relief Valve...
It is very annoying mine appears to be getting louder and more frequent.
The plan is to replace it with one that is updated?
"You can upgrade to the new OPRV, it has the holes slightly offset to get rid of that annoying moan." (rennlister quote)
My recent quest is to find this so called " New OPRV" It makes no sense to replace it unless it eliminates the moaning.
