I was riding in my buddies S2 and heard a noise that I have never heard on mine, let alone any 944.
It is a low humming noise that sounds like it is associated to the rpm's. It almost sounds like the sound you would hear if you had your emergency brake on and were rolling slowly...a sort of moaning, if you will. It appears to go away at higher rpm's, or at least we can't hear it.
Here is the kicker...it happens with the clutch engaged and disengaged!
Anyone ever delt with this before or have any ideas on this?

Are you sure it wasn't the driver? When you drive with him again, as soon as you hear the noise smack him in the mouth. If it changes, its him. Otherwise I haven't a clue.

Not wheel bearings as it does it when the car is standing still, too.
Driver....hmmmmm. Never thought of that. I smacked him, as instructed, but the noise never changed. Now he has two problems...the odd humming/moaning noise and a black eye.
Thanks for the idea, though...

Don't know what it is but I have it also. It seems to occure when the car is warmed up or after a spirted drive. I believe it may be something with the powersteering pump. It might be air in the system. Or the oil presure regulator. It doesn't seem to cause any problems.

I thought about the power steering pump, but it happens without turning the wheel. I guess it still could be that...I will check and see if it makes more noise, or is more pronounsed, when turning the steering wheel. Never even thought of the oil pressure regulator. I don't see a performance difference either. Thanks!

There is no change with turning the wheel. It just drones from what sounds like the passengers foot well at about 2500 rpm. You can make it go away by clutching and blipping the throttle a couple of time, usually.

right....it happens somewhere in the 1800 to 2600 rom range for me. Soooo could it be the throw out bearing, Power steering pump, water pump, doo hicky, thing-a-ma-bobber? It's starting to get on my nerves!

The S2s have a different oil pressure sending unit than the 4 valve cars. I have experienced this on two different S2 cabs that I have owned. It has to do with the way the OPS unit is valved. It should not cause any issues unless you experience fluctuation on the oil pressure gauge as well.
