Default Viscous clutch shaft play

Hi there,

I've just replaced the two bearings on the carrier for the viscous fan after noticing there was a small bit of play on the shaft. I had been hoping the play was a failed bearing rather than anywhere else.

The two bearings were a little on the rough side so they are replaced with new bearings but from checking the clutch shaft there is play on the shaft going into the viscous clutch.

I am wondering if anyone has replaced the bearing on that clutch itself and if so where I can get a bearing?

Any help is appreciated, the car is a 1979 5-spd European model.

Regards
Michael

Where is the play? Fore-aft or side-to-side?

The bearings should fit snugly on the shaft.

Sorry should have said this on my original post, it's a small bit of play side to side. The bearings fit nicely and the shaft spins fine when being turned.

So you can force it side-to-side with the car off? The clutch is a sealed unit and I'm not sure what it looks like inside. The shaft is pretty simple and it sounds like the bearings are good and the shaft isn't loose inside them. What did you observe with it off the car?

more than likely you need a new fan clutch I would call 928 INTL and see if they have a used one ,
make sure to give as much info as possible about your old part,
the early clutches had a few different versions

Hi Glen, yes same movement with new/old bearings side to side, it is slight in fairness but i doubt it should have any movement.

Cheers MrMerlin I had hoped there was a way of splitting it open and sorting that bearing there. I will just weight up my options and see was just hoping/wondering if anyone had done this before if I do end up with a replacement clutch I might just open up my old one for the fun of it and give it a go.

whats more important then the play is if the fan clutch works? when cold does it have drag can you hear it cycle on and off then running at temp

I am going to put it back in with the new bearings and check to see how it's running. Will check to see what I need to look for to make sure it's running as well as it should.

Cheers for the help!

Michael
