Default 928 timing belt, waterpump , Camshaft chain, tensioner pads,....

Hi guys,

Recently I bought a US-model 1986 32V 928 S.
I'm from Belgium.

Now I'm thinking to give the Porsche a new timing belt, waterpump ,front oil seals, cam pads, cam chains,...?

As I don't know the history of the car.

My question is if anyone did the same things before and could give me some extra information. Also i'm looking to compose a list of all the parts I'll need. I think some parts are different from the EU-versions?

I'll be using the Dwayne's garage how-to http://www.dwaynesgarage.norcal928.o...0Procedure.htm
but this doesn't mention anything about the cam pads and chains, seals, ....

thanks in advance!

how many miles?
I would remove the belt cover and inspect the belt run,
this will tell you a lot more than just guessing.
Post pictures if your not sure what your looking at.

NOTE as to the chains and tensioner pads,
I would only remove and replace the cam chains and the pads if your removing,
the dash,
the seats ,
the transmission,
the heads.

In other words dont mess with them.

NOTE the cam covers might be leaking/ weeping ,
if so then a cam cover refresh might be prudent .
Otherwise leave them alone.

Roger should have a comprehensive parts list and he will ship to you.
NOTE a US car needs US version parts though not many differences

US and ROW S3 cars are very similar especially the engine.
I have a comprehensive list of parts that may be needed as well as good tutorials.
Send me an email - roger@928sruus.com

First thanks for your answer! Mileage is 90.000miles,valve covers are not leaking, engine runs great, beautiful sound, the car was stored in USA for over 12 years (salesman told me) then came to Belgium. I'm thinking about the new pads and chains because a friend who drives a 944S2 had big issues with his engine. Pad above in pieces, chain broke, and made a hole in the valve cover, valves were bent. Of course it's one car out of... but on the internet there are a lot of people with the same problem, if it happens with my 928 it's double trouble in comparison with the 944.
Of course I will become member of this 928 form!

dont mess with the chains or pads ,
the 928 engine is different than the 944 engine and is not used like the 944 is.
The 944 engine sees a lot more high speed idle to 5 grand cycles than the 928 does,
thats why the parts wear out.

Based on your info you might just have to pull the cam BELT covers to see what you have,
and then drive the car.

posting pictures will assist you in this advice

I and many others used Dwaynes guide plus others. Surf the web and gather as many pictorials as you can before hand. Also remember that the tensioner stem has a washer that likes to fall off onto the floor while you're fiddling with it. As has already been pointed out, you can see in Dwaynes manual, his washer disappeared as well. The remedy is another disassembly. Go slow. The results are worth it.

Quick Reply: 928 timing belt, waterpump , Camshaft chain, tensioner pads,....
