Default S3 Front Body Wire Harness

I have an early 86 with ABS and need to replace the front body wire harness. Does anyone have a cross reference as to which S3/S4 might have an interchangeable harnesses?

Thanks in advance

autoatlanta.com

None will interchange, 928intl.com, just be clear what date you need it...if that matters.

Really depends which harness you are talking about.
Front of engine.
ABS harness.
Front light harness.

As you mentioned ABS maybe it is the ABS harness.
Your MY early 86 ABS harness is 928 612 121 03. It connects the ABS unit with all four wheels and the ABS brain. VIN range 92GS8 60061 to 60999 (85 S3 up to the start of the 86.5 USA).
The same harness was used on 16v S2 cars in 85.

It is the harness that has headlights, condenser fan, headlight motor, coil leads... basically all the stuff in the front of the car.

I just replaced that harness on my 87. Got a good used one from 928 Intl. While the overall condition was good, several connectors were beyond brittle so would advise that you check all connectors and replace as needed. It's also a great opportunity to clean several grounds that are part of the harness.

I pulled the engine as part of the replacement and took care of several engine items such as cam covers, oil galley pins, cam end seals, new OPG and added to a new 14 pin/engine harness from SeanR while at it.

The harness is one of the primary firewall entries and the firewall plug is not made to be easily removed like the LH/EZK harnesses. I removed the CE Panel since the harness has 5 or 6 colored plugs attached. I fed all the engine side wiring from the inside of the car out as the firewall plug is beveled on the engine side and don't see how it would be installed from the engine side of the car.

You will need to remove coolant tank to get to D clamps that hold harness against inner fender also need to pull both wheel liners so you can disconnect washer fluid pump, level sensor and get to the lights and horns. Also a great time to put in new Y connector and windshield washer fill neck.

I wouldn't want to do the replacement with engine still in place as there is almost no room to get to the harness when it nears the firewall.

Good luck!

yeah I will probably be pulling the engine. I have pulled 2 928 engines before and don't relish the task of getting the hoist out, plus I sold my engine stand so I'll need to buy another one.

I'm planning on calling 928Int tomorrow to figure out what parts I need.

I bought a new one for my 81 a few months ago from Porsche for $350. The one for your 86 shouldn't be that much different.

Part number you need is 928 612 001 21 fits 85 to 86 (pre 86.5). Current price new is circa $1000.
Used should be easy to find at Mark's place.

Early '86 with ABS did you say? I have same and have been searching everywhere for ABS sensor for the front...you wouldn't happen to have any leads possibly?

If 928 International can't source them they must be rare.... You might try some of the Porsche wrecking yards that used to maintain 928 and 944 supplies as they may have some unique parts.

The early ABS sensors have been NLA for a few years now and as yet no alternative has been found. Used is usually not an option as most are already toast.

thats what I'm finding..I even took a shot and ordered one from offshore...so I'm sitting with an abs sensor that's too short

Would love to find something that would work...thanks for the update.
