Default Coast-to-coast in my 928

Last week I completed a coast-to-coast trip in my 1986 928. I covered just over 7,200 miles in 14 days of travel. The trip took me from my home in Minnesota, to Carolina Beach, NC and back to Minnesota, then from Minnesota to Seattle and of course the return.

Just a word of thanks to the many, many Rennlisters who contribute advice, repair procedures and insight into 928 ownership. I also want to thank the vendors who make much of this possible including Mark Anderson and his crew at 928 International, Carl Fausett and his crew at 928 Motorsports, Roger Tyson and the Pelican Parts folks. My extra-helpful technicians have asked to remain anonymous.

Highlights include attending Sharks in the Mountains, running Tail of the Dragon, the reasonable (i.e. higher) speed limits out West, the Museum of Flight, US Highway 12 through Idaho, and so much more.

The car could not have run better. A decade of getting ready really paid off.

Overall a great trip in a great car, and I thank those who helped make it happen. And I am planning the next trip even now.

That's awesome and great that you had a safe trip.
However, pictures are it didn't happen...

That sounds like a fun trip. Good to hear you completed your adventure.
As already said, I'm having a hard time believing it actually happened.

Cool, hopefully we'll hear/see more of the journey.

On the Tail of the Dragon - May 20, 2017

Same deal - on the Dragon on May 20.

Tough crowd. I've posted a couple from the Tail of the Dragon runs. Others to follow....

Awesome to see someone using their 928 as Porsche intended, as a grand touring car. I recently opted out of taking mine on a trip to Northern Michigan due to heavy rain in the forecast and my rear tires being nearly bald. I was kicking myself all weekend for not taking it. We never had more than a mist of rain and the weather was beautiful and so are the roads.

New tires are being ordered shortly so I don't miss any other road tripping opportunities.

Agreed. I ran over the Mackinaw Straights Bridge in the summer of 2013 (after a very brief visit to the Parade in Traverse City) and back to Minnesota via the Upper Peninsula. It's kind of cool how the 2-lane highway up there (is that US 2?) has a passing zone every 10 miles or so to allow for some serious cruising. Perfect for a 928.

I started this trip with essentially brand-new tires and I am glad that I did.

My goal is to drive around Australia including Tasmania and a dash up to Uluru (Ayers Rock) which would be about 12000 miles. Still a lot of work and retirement before I get to that trip.
Our son lives in NY and we hope to land on the west coast and drive east one day. We have done a lot of driving in the southern states but not too much in the north so that would be a great trip during the warmer months.
Looking forward to more photos.

Ha! That's crazy. I was at the Musuem of Flight that same Saturday you were. When I was leaving the parking lot and I saw your red 928 with Minnesota plates. My phone was dead, otherwise I was going to take a picture and post it in the "Spotted in the Wild" thread. Wish I would have known you were coming in to town. Would have been great to chat. I leave this Saturday for a coast to coast trip in my '84. I hope it runs as good as yours did!

I'll be rolling through Minnesota on Monday the 10th. Let me know if you are around and want to meet up.

That's good to hear. I was planning on taking that exact road on my way back.

This photo is from SITM 2017. My car is way down the end of this line.

I attended the E30 Picnic held at the Lemay Collection in Tacoma, WA on June 25. E30s are BMW 3-series cars from 1984-1991. I drove an E30 for many years and about 170,000 miles from 1994-2007.

Unfortunately I don't have too many photos. The Dragon pics were purchased from the website of a photographer who set up on the roadside and had a concession going. These photos above are from my phone and I'm not the most enthusiastic cell phone photographer. My DSLR was down for this trip - very ironic, it's the only trip I've taken that is worth documenting!
