How Do You Get The Door Sills Off?
I want to clean under my plastic "928" door sills. They seem to be held on with pop off plastic fasteners. Will they break if I try to pry them off or is there some trick to the procedure?

I think that all the later cars have a black plastic rivet at the rear end of the plate, instead of a screw. Although it may look like one piece, the center of the rivet is a pin that expands the bottom portion when the pin was pushed flush with the head of the rivet. The easiest way to get the rivet out is to just push that center pin down and through the rivet using a nail or something similar. Once that plastic pin is pushed through, the rivet should pull out easily. You'll need a new rivet when you reinstall, since that plastic pin will be lost down in the hole somewhere.
Since your's is a black car, that clear plastic "928" insert in the panel doesn't contrast and show up as well as it does on other color cars. As long as you have the sills off, you might want to paint the back side of that clear plastic some color that will make the "928" part show up better once the sill is installed again. That will also eliminate ever seeing any dirt that collects under the clear plastic. Mine are painted red under there, to match the red "PORSCHE" embroidering of the floor mats.

Hi ErnestSw
Here's a couple of pics that might be useful:
http://homepage.mac.com/potw/DaveW928/PhotoAlbum39.html
Remove the single screw/plastic rivet at the rear end. then you have to lever DIRECTLY UPWARDS (my wording on the web page is ambigous) to release the clips. There are two types of clip: along the inner edge where the sill covers the metal sill/floor seam the clips are barbed metal and can difficult to start moving (although when they do they release suddenly). Along the outer edge are plastic mushroom fixings which pop out of their holes quite easily. once the whole plastic sill is levered up about 1cm it should be loose enough to remove sideways.
Things to watch out for: There is also a locating peg that sticks down from the transparent 928 component that is easy to break if the plastic sill isn't levered up far enough (I broke one of mine). You have to replace the rear fixing rivet as it's a one use only component. The white plastic fixings along the outer edge have two components - the white plug and a black sleeve that is prefitted into the hole in the sill. I needed to replace quite a few of these sleeves (very cheap) as about half had come apart. Finally it could be worth pricing up new plastic sills as over the years they do get quite worn and the transparency yellows. I replaced them, and it looked V good.
Cheers

Ernest......
To get them out with no damage I have done the following....
First I usually just drill out the rear rivet and always have a new one on hand to re-install.
Now for the trick.......many people suggest using leverage or a putty knife to pull up the outter portion of the sill........DON'T do this........you most likely will break some of the sill holding tabs in the process, and then it won't hold down as good in the future.
What you want to do is gently and evenly pull up the inside "hump" until it releases from the metal ridge.......once it has done this you can push the sill to the inside of the car sliding the sill off the white mushrooms with out any damage to the sills or the mushrooms. If you do this all gently and without real force nothing will get broken......
To re-install.......take all the mushroom clips out of their holes by turning them 90 degrees.......they will come right out......put them back in the sill slots and use gently pressure to pop the whole assembly back into place and replace the rivet.
As others have stated......watch the post in the middle of the sill to make sure it is in its hole.

It's dead simple, You've got to pry them off the inside "hump" with your fingers first.
Instead of pushing the little pins through I drilled them with a small bit, put a fine screw in them, and pulled the pins out with a pair of pliers. Worked like a charm on both sides. I was then able to reuse the fasteners.
