Default Euros in Cali

SO,

Do any of us (Rennlisters) have euros, old bodies, in California. I am selling my car and I have a guy who lives in California that really wants the car but he's not getting clear and consise info on bringing it back and have it be California legal.

Anyone that can share some info will be appreciated, I'm not looking for guesses but facts.

Thanks

If your car is properly federalized, and -fully- functional and clean...he may have hope.

If it wasn't federalized in California originally, then it will be a long, expensive and very iffy process.

"Cali-legal" Euros are pretty rare.

The federalization process was not terribly consistent. Some cars were fully compliant in all areas. Others, not so much. It was very dependent on the inspector doing the approvals.

California knows this. That's why getting a car that was federalized anywhere other than California approved to be registered there is...

Challenging.

Does it still have the Ca B.A.R. sticker in the door jamb?

If not he may have to take it through the referee inspection process which could equal big bucks to get it up to snuff with smog equipment, fees, etc. I've heard anywhere from a few thousand up to ten but that's hearsay.

There are a few I've met locally with pre-87 euros so maybe they'll chime in with better info. Good luck.

Default Euro

My car was deceived in Cali, I have the original paperwork, I haven't checked to see if that sticker is in the jamb. He has since sent me an email and he's nervous to do it, I would be too. Keep it coming guys, knowledge is power in this instance.

I hope this car goes to a great home, just don't have the time or extra funds to keep it going to the level I want so it's time to go to a great home.

Thanks again

Andy

The car needed to be federalized when it was new and stay in California for its entire life.

If it was registered anywhere else since, it will need to be refederalized again by a carb lab to be California legal. An expensive (+$3000) and inconvenient proposition.

Blake-not to hijack but did you have any smog certification issues with the Ford injectors? My guess is not, because the test is done at a relatively low RPM, but it seems like it's worth asking.

Agree if the BAR exemption has gone away this is not going to be easy to do.

I listed it on Cargurus. I've owned the car since '03, the people that did the federalisation did horrible job on the exhaust, Igor the X-pipe from Motorsport SLC and located the full euro catback exhaust or of Texas I think. That was along time ago.

It passed in Utah no problem for years but Utah isn't Cali when it comes to smogging a car.

It has the euro fuel injection. Not firmiliar with the Ford injectors for the euro cars.

My '78 Euro was originally Federalized in Florida. It's been in CA Since '80s. No CARB door sticker. Passes smog every time no issues. Problem is who knows what has changed since mid-80s in bringing in a federalized car to CA.

Not on the 89, they are 4 hole and actually have better atomization compared to the stock injectors improving the emissions numbers.

I haven't stuck them on the 81 and still run the factory L jet injectors without issue.

If the car was properly imported Federally, you should only need a Letter of Compliance from the manufacturer stating that it has California emissions equipment, as well as a current smog check certificate.

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/de...s/howto/htvr9a

If the car did not originally have California emissions equipment, it will most likely be an uncertain and painfully expensive process.

Hi I have a 1984 Euro 928s. I was lucky with the process, I purchased the car and had to get the new smog to transfer ownership. It passed the test but failed the visual inspection. I had to go to the referee. He referred it to the State board and it was grandfathered in. It had been registered in California since 1987. If it had not it had to go to a lab in the Los Angeles area for retrofit and certification. $5-10k. Sorry I don't have anymore news.
