Well, finally got a few hours to kill, removed the tank from the parts car, and cleaned it. Not easy. This tank has been changed before, and whoever did it used the wrong bolts, and they were crossed into the nuts on the car. It took 3 hours to get all 4 bolts out, then the clamps that hold the hoses on the overfill hose, and the vapor line connections were rusted to bits, and I could not take them off the tank, so I had to cut the hoses, which made me sick, because they were in very good shape. I then had to dremel saw the clamps off once the tank was down.

Anyway, the tank is in great shape, and quite clean inside. The strainer looks new. I think the fuel sender is bad. The cap from the bottom was broken and lying in the bottom of the tank. I pulled the sender, and used a stiff wire to flip it up and then slid the sender back down onto it. I then had to flip the tank over so it would slide further onto the sender, and then reinserted the strainer.

Needless to say, I am a whooped puppy. Now I need to do it again on the 79, and then replace / repair all the butchered fuel lines, and then install the tank.....sheesh...

Default More to do...?

Hey when you finish all that there are a couple of blades of grass near the tank that are higher than the rest and should be trimmed - and get those lawn clippings raked up, too...

I'll do better next time......

Glad the tank was ok after all of that DPO induced frustration.

Heck with the grass, we want more Porsche pictures!

I know how you feel with 10 cars in our household, there is always one "in need". I actually am starting to ween my kids off of the habit of expecting Dad to fix everything. Working on cars is fun for me, I want to keep it that way!

You got it guy....add to my list...tiburon brakes starting to squeal....sheesh...

Played with the 79 a bit more today.

Got the tank out, the gas smelled rotten, and was very oily, repaired the return line to the tank, which was all brittle and crumbly. Spliced in a new (used) fitting for the fuel sender (still need to solder on a new connector) , removed the crumbly fuel transfer line that goes through the frame, need to replace that....also, the vapor tank above the wheel has a broken fitting. I am going to epoxy in a stub pipe and then replace the hose (I have another tank on the parts car if this don't work...but I'm sure it will). The darn PO cut the end off the pipe from the tank to the accumulator (the hard pipe on the accumulator)...that ticks me, as I don't have another....I may braze an "olive" on the pipe and slide a hose over it, then clamp, or braze a barb fitting on it...that might be better....

I also found out the original color.....some sort of green....found it under a tear in the hatch trim....neat!

Next step,
Put new foam strips for the tank
Put new strips on the cradle
Repair fuel lines in wheel well,
Install good spare tank
Re plumb fuel line to pump
Remount accumulator and filter
Replace rubber lines under hood
Add fuel
Run pump and leak check
Fix my leaks ( I will have some)
Try to start.....

Got the tank strap cleaned, rust inhibited, and painted. Spent the morning putting foam tape on all contact points on the bracket assembly, cleaned underneath where the tank goes and replaced all the foam under there, removed soft line to hard pipe and replaced. Cleaned, rust inhibited, and painted the accumulator. Need to replace the fuel line from pump to accumulator ( PO cut the ends, so I need to do some creative connecting) and rerun the wires for the rear side markers, and the rear bumper light, which are just hanging out the back. Then I can reinstall the tank, and work on the rubber lines under the hood. Hope to do all that this week after work.

Got the fuel tank from the fire car installed, got the new filter and original accumulator reinstalled. Replaced the fuel lines at the back. Have to connect the pump to accumulator line, and replace the (2) rubber lines under the hood. Put some b-12 in the tank, along with some marvel mystery oil. Will add fuel after I get the under hood lines replaced. Also need to remove the FD lines and do the mini strainers, as well as the inlet screen....very close to a start attempt.

Thanks Tom.

Tanks all in and bolted up. All rear fuel lines, except for main from pump to accumulator, are connected. Vent tube to tank in fender well has been patched. Next up, the rear hose connection (need to fab a connector), and the 2 rubber lines under the hood along the firewall. But...first....had to put her into the 928's most favorite position!

Up on all fours....
