I called PayPal and was instructed that PayPal will NEVER ask you for personal information, EXCEPT to ask you to log in to your PayPal account and then enter information from within that secure site.

Very old scam. You'll get the same scam from people posing as eBay also.

Well what the hell is PayPal going to do about this obvious attempted internet bank fraud, which is a felony? It is very easy to track down what computer and server sent the request. I would demand that PayPal find out who is doing this or we could take our transactions else where.

E-Bay bought PayPal a year or so ago, maybe we could all voice our views through them! Its worth a try anyway.

A few thoughts on this;

The victims of these scams are more often elderly people who may be alittle out of touch with the electronic age, so if Gram and Gramps have decided to join the info age (like mine) take some time to be sure they are saavy about scams and viruses and such.

These scam artists are working harder to make these things look legit, don't be fooled, paypal and your bank and C.C. companies don't need passwords and PINs, they have access to your account and personal info already; if their asking, it's a scam.

Report any of these to the institution which is being falsely represented, all financial institutions have a place to report suspected fraud linked from their homepage; keeping them in the loop might law enforcement a jump on the perp.

I don't know if you remember the old "928 Manual" fraud of a couple of years ago, but PayPal was patently valueless in resolvong the issue. They determined that I was wronged and pulled the $1.58 that was still in the offender's account for me, and told me they considered the issue resolved.

Luckily the PayPal account was backed by VISA, who resolved the issue immediately............. much to PayPal's chagrin, I must add! I think VISA yanked the $300.00 from PayPal's account.

heh i signed up with this web site hosting company once, i used my grandfathers credit card because i dont have one. it was like $10 a month so he didnt mine. well after i tried to cancell the service they would never cancell it, because they said they already did and thier was no record of that account even existing. It took about 6 months i think.

There was an Ebay email scam like this a few months back. I checked it out and almost fell for it. They asked me for my information passwords, credit cards, etc but it wasn't from a secure site. Any time you give your credit card information on the internet, the address line will start with "https" as opposed to "http" which indicates a "secure site". Another red flag is if you don't initiate the transaction yourself. I notified the Ebay fraud department and that was the end of it for me.

I think the idiot who put that email together would have had a tough time fooling my 8 week old daughter. The sentence structure is about 2 miles south of Moronic. They really had me at "you cant use Paypal anymore"

I also have been scammed twice. Once when I bought a Porsche Manual...turned out to be a poor photocopy ...and more recently when I bought a video for the 9284. Someone who claims to know says that it's not original but rather a tape copy with color photocopy stuck in jacket. I emailed the guy with my concern but no response. He sells A LOT OF PORSCHE booklets and videos on Ebay, so beware. The tape works for me but I felt that the resale went down the tube and I paid too high thinking it was something other than what it apparently is. I wouldn't have been so high had I known it was not original.

I got a similar email for my earthlink ISP account. the URL included a bunch of padding so that it started with www.earthlink.net but actually pointed to a numbered URL.

I wanted to give those folks access to my credit card, but the server didn't respond.
