Default Windshield cracked today

Out for a quick cruise this afternoon and a small stone hit the base of the windshield. I watched as the windshiled began to crack from the bottom just below the wiper. I slowed down thinking the wind pressure may make it worse. By the time I returned home, the crack grew to about 6" long.

When I rub my nail across the crack I cannot feel anything, its as though the crack is insdie the glass. Any thought on whether it can be repaired or need replaced. If replacement is necessary can I get a new one at any winshield place?

Bummer!
928 INTL' used to list them but I didn't see any in the new catalog...
Call them and the other Big Three, for price comparison and bump cost and shipping against what your local Auto glass folks may quote.
There have been a number of post on replacement and where the glass came from... check archives... if you feel froggie buy one from a salvage yard, or someone parting a dearly departed sHARk out.
Caution whoever installs this puppy; when gluing in the rearview mirror mount even moderate pressure (reportedly) will crack the windshield.

I don't know whether it would work in your case, but maybe a windshield repair place could drill the end of the crack and try to pressure fill it.

Cool windshield replacement

Check this deal out: I answer a telephone solicitation one day in my office and it is from a company called Legacy Auto Glass. The guy asks if anyone needs a new windshield. I jokingly say my 928 could use one after a trip across the desert last summer which put thousands of tiny pits in both my windshield and my front bumper. He asks the name of my insurance co. and then says he will call me back. A few minutes later he calls back and says he will send some guys out to replace my windshield with a new tinted one with the antenna in it for free (my insurance said I had zero deductible for glass). AND....he will also add 2 round trip airfares to anywhere in the US for $50 more. (That totals exactly $50 for everything!)
I tell him he's joking....and he assures me he is serious. I opted for the American glass rather than the expensive German glass (he gave me my choice) because I heard it was harder and more pit resistant. Maybe there really is a Santa Claus.....or I just stopped being bad. Pretty good deal.

Call them and check it out or check their website. Maybe everyone can win.

Just had mine replaced--rock thrown by a truck put a round, golf-ball size shatter in the middle of the windshield, so repair wasn't an option. Had it replaced by the independent in Chattanooga that I use for all work, $614 plus tax. They said that they got the glass through a local windshield glass distributor. I have no idea whether I paid too much or just right. First new windshield since the car was new, though, and what a pleasure it is to see through glass with no sandblast or rock chips (of which mine had plenty). Good luck--sorry your's got cracked.

Just had mine replaced too. In Canada, they list for $1800.00....... installed. As it turns out, the installation was $218.00 of that.

Don't know if you have a "fast glass" store in your area, but they quoted me $359.00 installed for my 81'.

The repair methods out there are pretty much limited to cracks under the size of a dime. I doubt they can work with a crack the size of yours.

If your insurance has separate glass coverage [many do], you might get genuine Sekurit glass for your glass deductible.

My 911 has had two new windscreens in two years due to good old VIR stone damage. $100 each time. Glass claims to not effect claim history for comprehensive insurance under my policy [Natiowide].

Its worth a call.

George and Sandi,

Sorry to hear about your windshield...always a bummer. When I lived in NY and VT, I believe I replaced the windshields on my Honda / Acura products twice on both cars within 5 years due to all of the small rocks thrown from trucks, particularly in the winter. My recollection is that my State Farm insurance policy there would cover repair but not the cost of replacement unless you had the optional glass replacement policy.

Now that I am in FLORIDA, I have heard from a couple of colleagues that Glass Coverage is mandatory in this state and so it is relatively painless to get one replaced. My 89 s4 has two insults currently (not German glass), one of which is right in my line-of-sight directly above the POD.

Anyway, I am going to look into getting a replacement very soon...will look into this Legacy Auto Glass outfit...thanks for the tip, Ron_H. I wonder if PPG make a 928s4 replacement windshield? I've had good luck with their products in the past.

Best regards,
Tim

Thanks for the info, I will try Legacy tomorrow. if that does not work out, I will try some of the other responses. Car sitting in garge, crack has grown to about 9", hoping I do not find it in the front seat in the morning.

Maybe car is jealous, I ordered some performance parts for the Jeep today!!

I've had to replace the windshield in my 89S4 twice. The first time was an odd experience. Glass guys I called said no problem getting the original German glass installed for about $500 only to later admit that they could not get it except from Porsche at about $1000. Eventually found a place that did the windshield for $350 with PGI glass (I deduced to be an australian glass company) but it took them several weeks. Second time around I called the local All Star glass outlet. They had the windshield in stock (Pilkington glass) and was $280 installed in an hour.

6" in really too long to temporarily repair. Shop around. You should be able to get an aftermarket (not Sigla) windshield for $250-300.

For what it is worth, a new glass shop opened across the main road from my subdivision. Since a tile place opened up at the same time, I pulled in there with my '66 Ford truck with a cracked windshield to ask if they could fix it.

They DID have a window-antenna 928 windscreen in stock!

So I'm like 200 meters from 928 parts....KEWL!

But what blew my mind was that they had a semi wrap-around windscreen for a '60-66 Ford truck in stock as well! Since it was across the street and [basically] free, I had them replace the broken window in the truck.

Sometimes you kill the bear. Generally he eats you-
