I can't see an difference. I've heard comments that the German glass is harder or softer or doesn't crack as readily. Not worth 3-4 times to me.
Last winter after a snowfall had melted I saw that my rear windscreen had shattered, I found a tiny hole but no obvious pellet or stone, so I've no idea what caused it. My insurance company was billed $2300 by the windscreen replacement company, they said they could only source the glass from Porsche, luckily my contribution was a mere $100 although the car was off the road for a week while waiting for the glass.
I started a new thread on this topic , because I did not know how to make my findings a priority, so check that one out. (Windshiled broken - New Problem)
Bottom line - the windshield is no longer available as an aftermarket item. Porsche stopped supplying it sometime last year. No one (even Legacy Glass) has it, unless you get real lucky and find one lying around.
The big 3 could order it direct from Porsche, but the freight may kill you or the glass. So it looks like we are stuck with the local dealer, unless someone in the Rennlist community can help out.
I used to think a front end bra with and air deflector was unattractive, now they are starting to look alot better. Not sure why Porsche would restrict the glass from the aftermarket, sounds kind of selfish to me, not to mention much more expensive.
Try 1-800-328 9803 ext 1059 for Legacy. That might be a California no. but they may be able to find an appropriate no for your location.
If that doesn't work, PM me and we'll figure it out. That is the no. to which I report the date my car will be available for installation of the glass. I am waiting for a new dash and pod to arrive from Just Dashes before installing the glass, because it is easier to work on the dash with the windshield out.
Just a thought here.....is there a price difference between a 928 glass with the antenna as to the glass without? If there is, this might be an opportunity to upgrade to a roof top antenna.
I installed a roof top antenna in my S4 and I love how it looks, particularly with the aero mirrors.
If there is a price difference of $100 or more then you are getting this antenna mod for free.
That promo had some hooks, for two, stay places required and limited, But, they had one deal with a couple of $30 gift certificates, a couple of IIRC free nights in Holiday Inn Express, sounded better to me, Anyhow, with my zero dollars deductible, promos sound like a fun way to go.
They said they use PPG glass for my 86 model. He is checking on actual availability, and possible installation date.
The company I called after my web search called back. It is the same Legacy Auto Glass.
Update on Legacy Auto Glass They said they can get OEM glass for the same price ~$1030 as the PPG. They required that I file a claim and get State Farms approval to get what they call precision glass (Porsche OEM). They facilitated the call through a group they called ~links. I did get the Holiday Inn promo. They said they can install the glass next week.
Wait until Porsche stops making TB and waterpumps!!! Then these cars will be worthless. Pretty sad only 7 years after they discontinue the car they peter out the windshield.
You can reach Legacy Auto glass via their website @www.legacyautoglass.com. They have a toll free number and an online quote form. I was told today that they could no longer get the glass for the 928.
I ended up going through my insurance company, who uses a service called NetCost. They contacted a local glass shop who contacted Safelite Auto Glass, who is ordering it from the local Porsche dealer. Now my insurance company is paying 3 people to do what I could have done myself. Oh well, no impact on my insurance rates and it's costing me $250. No wonder car insurance costs are so high.
Thanks for the contact info., it shows states where they install glass, no promo info. on the website. They said they can get the 1986 PPG or original windshield. Funny that they get the same price for PPG or OEM. Since they tried to insist on PPG, maybe they have a bigger margin on aftermarket. Looks like it pays to have an S3, not an S4. Dont know about S2 or earlier windshield availability.
