I saw that episode, and yes, he does refer to them as 928 headlights.

The steering wheel was also from later model 928s.

I was at a "993 Club" event at a local winery about 20(?) years ago and there were two cars there with the 968 headlights. As I recall, the owners said it was a factory option.

What does Wayne think about the 928? It finally occurred to me: It's a car he can't make any money from, and coupled with the usual prejudice, simply not an object of desire for him. Dryly formulaic, really. It would be more interesting to see Roger's reaction, but we're probably better off not knowing.

"Flachbau" is the German market term for what we knew in the USA as "Slope Nose" or "Slant Nose." That car with the 928-style lights is not a Flachbau. There were a few aftermarket companies that made that conversion. some even grafted an early 928 tail onto the 911 - ugly if you ask me.

Werks II (Special Wishes Program) probably made some of these cars. They would theoretically do anything the customer wanted with colors and options.

I drove a 968 tip. It wasn't impressive. I would think anyone having a choice would pick the MT except if they didn't know how to shift. The tip is fine, but it's not something I would seek out. I didn't care for the cab version of the 968, but really like the coupe. On the inside, it's a 944 late revision, and the chassis is basically all 944(exc shocks, springs). Not really a comfy car, but it was ok. Still some deals on marginal 968s out there, but nice ones have gone up recently.

I prefer most coupes over their convertible counterparts, except the 944/968 which I've always seen as one of the best looking convertibles available.

Looks like the lights are oval, and don't come up fully vertical:

What did you do with your "928 Flachbau" today?
Seems there is a lot Wayne doesn't know. There were 39 turbo S flachbau's produced for the US market. There were 17 turbo S package cars that had the full turbo S treatment but had the standard vs 968 headlights. There were 27 ROW versions and an additional 10 Japanese turbo S's using the old 930 bodywork. Considered one of the rarest Porsche's made.

the full story is here. http://www.flachbau.com/

I am still kicking myself for not buying my friends 94 Flachbau for $130k back in 2008. One recently sold for $1.5 mm. Were else can you get return on investment like that??

I have the only known original turbo S flachbau rear tail in its original gel coat hanging in my garage.

As far as Wayne goes I have judged a number of cars he sold including some nice 968 cabs that he swore were all original paint and the owners paid a premium for. I felt bad showing them the obvious signs of paint work done and it wasn't great quality. The overspray was really bad as well.
